With an intense winter testing concluded, teams are now heading to Melbourne for the first GP of the F1 2014 season. Mercedes seems to have the best engine package, Renault the worst with Ferrari filling in the inbetweenies spot.
Merc set for dominance in new F1 era?

With RBR struggling and Mercedes topping the timesheets during pre-season testing, one could wonder if F1 is set for a MERCEDES ERA. Vettel mentioned that RBR's troubles could take a while: “We still have lots of problems – large and small – that we need to fix,” Vettel is quoted by the German newspaper Die Welt. “Then we have got Melbourne and even if – and this is just me talking – even if the first six races don’t go to plan, there’s still 13 or 14 left,” he insisted. (GMM) Williams was full of praise of the new merc engine: "It's a guality product and it is reliable" said Pat Symonds. Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas were already talking of better Williams times to come, speaking of the new merc engine and a better atmosphere within the team compared to last year. Dark horse remains Ferrari as we still have to see what the "reds" have in store... Looks like 2014 will be at least different to previous years.
Mercedes hits the ground running.

Mercedes stole a march on its rivals with their latest challenger: the W05. The car proves to be a rock solid concept that not only looks the best on the grid, but was the first car being able to complete a race distance. The car is reliable, that's a fact, but only at Jerez for the moment. The real heat still has to come: first Bahrain and later on races like for example Malaysia. But the works team is confident that the W05 can also tackle these obstacles. One question remains: how about the speed? How is the pace compared to fellow merc engine teams like McLaren, Williams and FI or against the Ferrari works team. This blurry picture will get clearer towards the end of the 2nd Bahrain test at the beginning of March. Nor Rosberg, nor Hami have pushed the W05 to its limits yet, but that can also be said of the other teams. Red Bull on the other hand has more worries going on, as they couldn't complete more than 20 decent laps due to Renault engine + bodywork cooling issues. So not really much data gathered to go through and no idea of the true pace of their challenger. A worse start can't be imagined for the WCC team. Let's see if Renault can come up with a solution...
The unwrapping begins!

With winter testing around the corner and much earlier this year due to the new regulations in 2014, teams are forced to launch their 2014 contenders a bit earlier. Which team will launch its car first of the whole pack? Ferrari is rumoured to launch theirs the 23-24-25th of January, as winter testing kicks off the 28th. With such an early launch and of course the new regs, it'll be no doubt a race against time to get the reliability sorted before the 15th of March (first QWF session of the season). All the engine manufacturers are expecting teething problems and will be hoping to get them sorted before the end of winter testing. Let's see who comes up with what, once the blankets are taken of the new machines. Will we see again some beauties or will they stay those ugly beasts... It's time to unwrap!
2014: new rules, new rulers?

With a bunch of new rules coming the teams' way in 2014, no one knows if it will shake up the grid or not. One thing is for sure, all the 11 teams face a serious task in mounting these challenges. Will Adrian Newey keep RBR on top? Will Mercedes take over the top spot? Can Alonso or Raikkonen give Ferrari the boost they need? Or has Lotus found the sweet spot during the winter with their new car. And last but not least, can McLaren bounce back from a dreadful 2013?2014 is going to be interesting.
