With an intense winter testing concluded, teams are now heading to Melbourne for the first GP of the F1 2014 season. Mercedes seems to have the best engine package, Renault the worst with Ferrari filling in the inbetweenies spot.
With just over a week to go, teams are making their final tweaks to their Melbourne spec cars in order to be more performant and/or reliable. Williams seem to have the best average speed/reliability combination, while favorites Mercedes are indeed blindingly fast but maybe not so reliable.
Can Lewis or Nico give Mercedes the top spot in Oz?
The pecking order is hard to establish but according to several sources: Mercedes and Williams are clearly in front. Ferrari might mix it with the other two powered merc teams: Force India and Mclaren. While reigning world champions RBR and other Renault powered teams will have to be satisfied with seeing the chequered flag in Melbourne. This sound like a great opportunity for Marussia which has the Ferrari V6 in its car and is aiming for at least one point in the season opener. The renault teams are warned...
Many questions to be answered: Can Mercedes get straight down to business or will reliability have something to say about that. Will Williams return to the front? Can any Renault powered team finish the race? Will Marussia take already advantage of the stuggling Renault teams? And how many teams will finish the australian GP?

I'm curious what the now merc front wing will look like, hopefully it doesn't create a crash like the original one did in testing.

According to AMuS, the new Mercedes nose still hasn't passed the crash test and will be delayed. Supposedly, it is a very difficult engineering task, because the nose is so short (75 cm for the entire crash structure) and there are doubts whether it will be possible at all.
But they are bringing a new front wing to Australia.

Also according to AMuS, Aldo Costa describes this FW as very aggressive and together with a tighter, optimized engine cover it should bring about a 2 tenths per lap upgrade.

What utter@#$%&is that.
The first engine had just been installed in his car, never run before - so the "Lewis" factor doesn't work there.
For the race engine - this is an issue that did not materialise until the race so... and not an issue they have faced with over 20,000km of running; so not sure Lewis is to blame here either.

Well, Lewis has a rather long, extensive and complete record of never listening to what his engineers tell him. He is one hell of a driver, but ever since his first year at McLaren when he had some good success, he thinks his @#$%& don't stink and that he knows more than anybody else.
He even directly disobeyed a direct order and refused to pull in to retire the car. Of course his engineer tried to cover for him but it was too late for that.
At least he had the guts to admit he did stay out on his own accord.
There's a lot of things that Lewis does ESPECIALLY when it comes to doing what his engineers tell him to do that he simply ignores. And when his gear box blows up, his engine lets go, or he runs out of gas he blames the team for a mistake.
He's got a long track record of it. I'll bet a million bucks I don't have that he screwed around with a setting at the start to get an advantage over Rosberg that he shouldn't have and screwed his car up.
It certainly wouldn't be the first time for that..and everybody knows it.

Nope. Glad he's gone.
Pal, I watched it live on a 60 inch HD screen with 7.1 surround. It went down like this:
Engineer: Lewis, you need to retire the car this lap. We need to save the engine.
Lewis: No reply.
Lewis then passes the pit in. AFTER LEWIS HAD ALREADY GONE BY THE PIT IN AND STARTED DOWN THE FRONT STRAIGHT:
Engineer: OK Lewis, then stay out there and see if it corrects itself.
That was two things:
1. A stab at Lewis for being stupid and disobeying a team order.
2. A lame attempt to save a little face and not reveal that they had a spoiled brat Sebastian Vettle on their hands.
Not only that, 15 minutes later, Will Buxton caught up with Lewis and asked him what happened.
Lewis then said, and I quote: "...and they told me to retire the car but I just decided to go on. I was hoping it would fix itself but clearly it was a lost cause and I had to retire the next lap."
So, I knew it.
The commentators knew it.
The engineers at Mercedes knew it.
Lewis admitted to it.
But you say he didn't.

Correct BUT mr knowsitall, Paddy Lowe/Toto confirmed that they wanted him to continue in order to see if it would correct itself.That's why they said: stay out, stay out
