Tom Carnegie: 1919 - 2011

This is a very sad day for IndyCar fans, and for anyone who has attended any event - Indy, F1, NASCAR or Moto GP - at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Tom Carnegie, the track announcer for IMS from 1946-2006, has passed away at the age of 91. 

Carnegie's unmistakable baritone vioce became as much a part of the 'aura' of the Indy 500 as anything else in the hearts of die-hard fans, and his enthusiasm was infectious. His clarion calls of "And hees... ON IT!" (as a driver started a qualifications run) and "And it's a Neeew Track Record!" (whenever a qualifactions time/speed mark was set) are indellibly etched in the memories of all who had the privilage of hearing them first hand.

Even after 'retiring', Tom was frequntly back in the announcer's booth during qualifications as a guest.

Tom is survived by his wife and three children.

TC was a giant. The perfect voice for Indy. He started 2 years before I was born and was announcing every year I was at qualifying or the race and that was 20+ trips to the Brickyard. It wouldn't have been Indy without him.
