Edmonton Race Back On Track

After appearing to have fallen through the cracks this past November, the annual IndyCar Series trek to Edmonton Canada is now back on the schedule for 2011 though 2013. Race promoter Octane Motorsports Events and the Edmonton City Council have finally come to an agreement over the cost of facility upgrades.     

The problems stemmed from fact that the race is held on the city airport tarmac, and ongoing reapirs/upgrades are forcing a track layout change, requiring further paving work that the city was initially unwilling to pay for. While details of how this impasse was resolved are not known, the main thing for IndyCar fans is that the race - which is one of the more popular stops currently on the circut - is back, at least for now.

INDYCAR CEO Randy Bernard issued the following statement; “We are extremely pleased that the City of Edmonton and Octane were able to reach an agreement to continue our event. We have to thank the city, mayor, local businesses and Octane for working together to make this happen and, of course, the fans for pushing for it. We know our fans in Edmonton are looking forward to seeing this race restored and we plan on to deliver a great event for them.”

The race will retain it's original schedule date of July 24th. There will also be a Firestone Indy Lights Series support race held there during that weekend.

With Edmonton back on the schedule, the last unresolved issue for the 2011 IndyCar Series campaign is whether or not there will be one more oval race after the Oct. 2 event at Kentucky. There have been ongoing talks with Las Vegas Motor Speedway about holding the season finale there, but so far they have not resulted a firm deal.
