(Most Of) 2011 IndyCar Schedule Released

The IRL held a press conference today at the historic Milwaukee Mile racetrack to unveil the 2011 IndyCar Series schedule. They chose the world's oldest closed course oval to highlight the fact that it is back on the calendar after financial woes forced it's absence this year.

There have been a number of changes to the schedule as IndyCar Fans have come to know it over the past few seasons. The IRL has ended - for now, anyway - it's relationship with the NASCAR-owned International Speedway Corporation. This means that the Kansas, Chicagoland and Homestead-Miami ovals, as well as the historic Watkins Glen road course, are gone. In their place will be not only Milwaukee, but also a street race in downtown Baltimore and the 1 mile oval at Loudon NH.

While Milwaukee is back, it was not returned to it's 'traditional' slot as the follow-up race to the Indy 500: Texas Motor Speedway will keep that for now as they try out the 'twin 275' races next year. 

The one peice missing from the announcement is the season finale. Word is that the IRL is working out a deal to bring it to the 1.5 mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway: Hopefully, we will have a solid date for that soon.

IRL CEO Randy Bernard is very pleased with the 2011 schedule. “It was important that the IZOD IndyCar Series continue to strike a balance between ovals and non-ovals to maintain our claim to the most diverse racing schedule in the world. We want to have the best drivers in the world, and it’s important that our schedule truly challenges the best through short ovals, speedways, temporary circuits and road courses."

Here is the complete (minus the season finale) 2011 IndyCar Series schedule:

3/27: St Peteresburg FL - street course

4/10: Brimingham AL - road course

4/17: Long Beach CA - street course

5/1: Sao Paulo, Brazil - street course

5/29: Indianapolis 500 - 2.5 mile oval

6/11: Ft Worth TX - 1.5 mile oval (two races on same evening)

6/19: Milwaukee WI - 1 mile oval

6/25: Newton IA - .875 mile oval

7/10: Toronto ON - street course

7/24: Edmonton AB - airport tarmac course

8/7: Lexington OH - road course

8/14: Loudon NH - 1 mile oval

8/28: Sonoma CA - road course

9/14: Baltimore MD - street course

9/18: Motegi, Japan - 1.5 mile oval

10/2: Sparta Ky - 1.5 mile oval

TBA: Las Vegas NV??? - 1.5 mile oval
