Dario, Not Helio

After a week where most of the press and fans thought that Helio Castroneves was about the join the four-time Indy 500 winners club, it was Dario Franchitti who dominated the 94th running of 'The Greatest Spectacle In Racing'. The Scot would lead 155 of the 200 laps, only surrendering the point as fuel cycles played out.

Things did get a bit exciting towards the end of the day, however. A late race (lap 161) crash just after Dario and several others had pitted put the Ganassi driver sixth in line under yellow, giving those ahead of him hope that they might yet steal the show - if their fuel held out.

Mike Conway lead the first few laps once the green flag came back out, and then his D&R teammate Justin Wilson took over when he was forced to pit. Wlison's luck also ran short, and he surrendered the point to Castroneves, who would be forced to pit with just nine laps remaining. With Graham Rrahal and Tony Kanaan also having pitted, Dario Found himself back in the lead. Panther Racing's Dan Wheldon would try to chase him down, but a last lap crash - the scariest of the day, which saw Mike Conway's car fly into the catch fence - froze the field under yellow and secured the win for Franchitti: It was his second Indy 500 victory, the first coming in 2007.
