Going Backwards (Is A Good Thing)

With five road and four street courses on the schedule for the 2010 season, the IRL has decided to put a reverse gear into the cars of the IZOD IndyCar Series for those venues. The idea is to make it easier - and quicker - for drivers to rejoin the fray should they have an off-track excursion, especially down one of the 'run-off' areas common to the street circuts.

This feature should help the driver in trouble - provided that his/her car isn't damaged - make it back into the fight without losing too many positions. It should also cut down on the need for full-course yellow flag cautions and course workers potentially putting themselves in harm's way to aid a stranded driver.

The new gear, provided by series supplier Xtrac, will get it's first workout at the season-opening round in the streets of Sao Paulo, Brazil during the weekend of March 12-14th.
