Another Rung On The Ladder

The Indy Racing League has entered into a partnership with the independently run Star Mazda Championship Series whereby it becomes the latest (and final?) rung on the driver development ladder leading up to the IndyCar Series. Star Mazda will now "slot in" between the newly revived US F2000 National Championship - which will now use Mazda power plants - and the Firestone Indy Lights Series.
The deal was announced at a racing trade show being held in Orlando FL by IRL president of competition, Brain Barnhardt. The overall development ladder is being called 'The Road To Indy'.
The Star Mazda Championship Presented by Goodyear uses 250hp Mazda 'Renesis' rotary engines to power their spec-built carbon-fiber chassis. As is the case with the US F2000 series, will run a mixture of ovals, road & street courses (they traditionally always have). All four series can be seen on the same weekend during the IndyCar stops at St. Petersburg (FL), Indianapolis (where the Star Mazda and US F2000 races will be held at nearby O'Reilly Raceway Park) and Iowa.
I will post the full Star Mazda schedule in a new article on the left-side menu shortly.
