Porsche Looking At Joining IndyCar?

When the second round of the discussions to draw up an engine/chassis specifications package to take effect for the 2011 IndyCar season was held earlier this month, all that the IRL would disclose was that there were five potential engine manufacturers in attendance.

It's probably safe to assume that one of them was Honda, which remains committed to the series.

Yesterday an article, written by Energy Efficient Motorsport, UK, appeared online that states that the identity of another participant has been found out: Porsche. The brief article consisted of little more than a report of their seeing an on-line article by the German motorsport.total.com website which included quotes attributed to Wolfgang Durheimer, Porsche's Executive Vice-President of Research & Development, acknowledging the company's participation and continued interest in the talks.

You can read the article for yourself here:

Porshe was briefly involved in the pre-split CART incarnation of the Indy Car Series back in the late 1980s, winning once with former F1 driver Teo Fabi.

Would be great to see a manufacturer like Porsche come into the series. I imagine Penske might be a good starting place...

There has been something of an "update" to this story. As I have mentioned before, SpeedTV.com's Robin Miller is one of the two journalists covering the IRL who always seems to have the most accurate "inside sources". I am told that on his weekly radio show (I don't have XM radio, so I don't get it) he verified that Porsche was indeed at the meeting: in addition, Audi & Alfa Romero were there as well.

He also said that the 1.5 litre, strait block four cylinder engine looks to be the option that everyone has settled on.

I'll keep everyone updated as I find out more. (Sm13)
