Barrichello quickest in Sunday warm up

Sunday warm up for the 2002 British Grand Prix ended with Ferrari leading the way by a comfortable margin. It looks like a 2 stop strategy for Ferrari as their warm-up pace was very hot and leaving the rest trailing behind.

With only 30 minutes of time available in the final session ahead of today’s race is was all go for Ferrari as the pit lane exit went green. Michael Schumacher was lined up in the pack in the pit-lane as he took the spare car out for an installation lap. No problems and the world champion returns to the pits and proceeds to jump into his race car. Rubens Barrichello is also quickly on track and is using intermediate tyres, a couple of exploratory laps for the Brazilian and he is back in the pits, just as Schumacher takes to the track once more.

Nearly at the halfway point in the session and Schumacher goes fastest with a lap 1 second faster than David Coulthard in the McLaren. Barrichello is also looking quick this morning and it is he who moves to the top of the times with a lap of 1.23.525 but he was not to stay fastest for long as Schumacher continues to improve and puts in a 1.23.137 to go back to the front. Interestingly Williams seem to be saving their race engines and are only sending out Montoya in the spare car as the two race chassis sit on jacks in the pits.

As Barrichello continues to lap he is taking the chance to sweep over his starting grid position of second place in order to try and put some rubber down on the track, already thinking about the race ahead and the good start he will be hoping to get. 10 minutes to go and problems look apparent for McLaren as Coulthard comes into the pits with a smoky engine similar to that seen at Monaco.

5 minutes to go and Schumacher is continuing to put in some very good laps and is consistently at the same pace 1.23.035 is the new fastest lap set by the German as it looks certain that Ferrari are going to run at least a 2 stop race as their pace suggests. 12 laps completed for Michael and yet another improvement a 1.22.815 and if Ferrari have this pace in the race then it will be another domination.

Barrichello is also out on track in the closing minutes of the session and he is looking very quick also and fast he is as he moves into the top position with a blinding lap of 1.22.371. So Ferrari looking very strong to have great race pace and with the rest being quick off their pace in the warm up it looks like a good day ahead for Ferrari. It was also nice to see the Ferrari team take the chance to do a double pit-stop with both cars coming in together in a simulation of a racing pit-stop in the event of rain later this afternoon.
