Barrichello leads the way at a wet Silverstone

The opening free practice session for the 2002 British Grand Prix ended with Ferrari in first place with Rubens Barrichello. Michael Schumacher’s session never got going after spinning out on his installation lap.

A damp and rainy Silverstone greeted the teams for the first of today’s 1-hour free practice sessions. It was a slow start to the session for Ferrari and it was some 20 minutes before Michael Schumacher emerged on track, but it was not to be good for the world champion he spins off the track at Abbey and is rescued by the track marshals. Rubens Barrichello however was soon to move into the top position ahead of Jenson Button in the Renault.

Problems for Williams and BMW are already apparent as Juan Pablo Montoya’s session is ended due to another engine failure. Barrichello has completed 5 laps so far with just 20 minutes of the session to go and his best time so far is a lap of 1m 33.531 seconds.

As the session comes to an end the heavens open again and the rain falls down harder meaning no chance for the drivers to improve on their earlier times. Barrichello puts in a few more laps but the weather is already playing havoc with all the teams schedule.
