The Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro driver did 16 laps of the modified track, under covered skies which did produce rain for a few moments. His best time was 1’33”665. Team-mate Michael Schumacher was second fastest in 1’33”768, having completed 15 laps. Thanks to Nick Heidfeld, there was a trio of Ferrari engines at the top of the time sheet, the Sauber man lapping in 1’34”924. A surprising fourth – although it is not possible to say if he was running new tyres or light fuel – was Allan McNish in the Toyota (1’34”941,) ahead of the second Sauber of Felipe Massa (1’34”982.)

Rounding off the top six was David Coulthard, the McLaren-Mercedes man lapping in 1’”35”021. The Ferrari duo worked on race set-up, both men using just one set of tyres in what was a troublefree session. Schumacher tried the new design of engine cover.
