Barrichello fastest in free practice 1

Rubens Barrichello was fastest in the opening free practice session in Canada while team mate Michael Schumacher was hot on his heels in second place.

Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro got its Canadian GP weekend off to a good start with both its drivers at the head of the field, after the first hour of free practice. Rubens Barrichello was quickest in 1’16”930, while Michael Schumacher was next in 1’16”991. The Ferrari boys were the only drivers to break the 1m 17 second barrier. The top trio was completed by the Jordan of Giancarlo Fisichella, the Italian who is something of a Montreal specialist. Fourth and first of the non-Bridgestone runners was David Coulthard (1’18”156) just ahead of his McLaren-Mercedes team-mate Kimi Raikkonen who lapped in 1’18”203. Completing the top six was the Arrows of Heinz-Harald Frentzen in 1’18”340, Ralf Schumacher, last year’s Canadian race winner, is only 16th at the moment in his BMW-Williams.

The Ferrari drivers completed 30 laps - 16 for Rubens and 14 for Michael. A few minor changes were made to the mechanical set-up on the Brazilian’s car, while the world champion had a slight brush against the final corner protection wall and engineers and mechanics are now checking for any damage, prior to the second half of the session. Both men were happy with the balance of their F2002.
