Jarno Trulli emerged quickest after this morning’s final ninety minutes of free practice for the Monaco GP. The Italian lapped the twisty streets of the Principality in 1’17”429. The Renault man’s time is just one thousandth of a second under last year’s pole position time, set by David Coulthard.
This morning, the McLaren-Mercedes driver was second fastest in 1’17.506. Third was the BMW-Williams of Juan Pablo Montoya (1’17.665) and fourth was his team-mate Ralf Schumacher (1’17”713.) These four, all using Michelin tyres, were the only drivers to get under the 1m 18s barrier. Completing the top six were the two Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro drivers. Rubens Barrichello was fifth in 1’18”309, having completed 40 laps, while Michael Schumacher did 32 laps on his way to a best time of 1’18”471. The German had a technical problem on his F2002 which the engineers are now analysing.
Both Ferrari men tried a new front wing this morning. The main novelty of this session is that for the first time, all the teams worked to an “open door” policy, as a new instruction has been issued banning the use of screens in front of the garages. These were used throughout the pit lane in an attempt to foil attempts at “espionage,” but it has been agreed that the public should be allowed to see what goes on in the garages.
