Michael Schumacher reckons Juan Manuel Fangio will always remain F1’s greatest ever driver.Schumacher equalled Fangio’s record of five titles last season and is widely expected to become the sport’s first six-time world champion this year.

But the German is in thrall to Fangio’s achievements and says he will always remain the best ever.

Schumacher told The Sun: "There's no way you can compare me with him. What he achieved at the wheel of a fairly basic car in just shirt sleeves and with no helmet hardly bears thinking about.

"It wasn't the same sport. No, I could never do what he did. That man was a hero."

Schumacher added that he would quit Formula 1 as soon as he sees a driver who is quicker than him.

He said: "I know one day a new boy will be quicker than me. That's life. I'm prepared for that and I won't do a single race too many.

"So far I haven't spotted that person so retirement isn't on the cards - yet."

Schumacher is expecting a much closer battle for the championship this year – and has tipped McLaren to take the fight to Ferrari.

He said: "I am certain our rivals will close the gap and this season's championship will be tighter.

"The way we dominated last season was an abnormal state of affairs and I can't see that happening again.

"I have the feeling our biggest rival will be McLaren. My team-mate Rubens Barrichello is also not to be dismissed because he's a very fast driver."
