An attempt by Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello to stage a dead heat finish in the United States Grand Prix ended with the closest ever finish - and the championship jigsaw complete for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro. Rubens' win on the line sealed his second place in the world drivers' championship for the first time and means the team can now claim a clean sweep in 2002 including Michael's drivers' crown and the constructors' title. The drivers held their starting positions throughout the race until the last lap, having made two stops against third place driver David Coulthard's one-stop strategy.
Jacques Villeneuve, who also stopped twice, rounded off a successful weekend for Lucky Strike B.A.R. Honda with a point in 6th place, maintaining his grid position. Giancarlo Fisichella was 7th for DHL Jordan Honda

* Ross Brawn - Technical Director - Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro “The Bridgestone tyres were very good today but we knew we had to opt for a two-stop strategy. We were cautious at the start of each new stint to protect the tyres somewhat because the wear rate increased today, but after that they were able to push. After the second stops we told the drivers to turn the engines down and look after the cars but they were very evenly matched today.”
* Jock Clear - Jacques Villeneuve's Race Engineer - Lucky Strike B.A.R. Honda “The two-stop strategy on the Bridgestone tyres was the right choice for us today. We were lucky to be in clear air for the whole race doing our own lap times. The cars ahead of us today are very competitive; we want to be the first of the rest and that is what we are aiming for next year.”
* Hisao Suganuma - Technical Manager - Bridgestone Motorsport I” am very pleased with this result. The tyres worked as we expected and helped Ferrari to another one-two finish and also a further point for B.A.R Honda. The conditions were quite tough today with high temperatures but, as we saw, our teams were able to make different choices on strategy and still perform competitively. The next race is, of course, Bridgestone's home grand prix so we leave here determined to pull out all the stops at Suzuka and end the season on top.”
