It's time to give Ross a break and let them race

Let them race

Ferrari have been heavily criticised in the media, by fans and by other team owners for taking advantage of their superior package and controlling the race pace, ever since Austria they have been under the spotlight, well is it now time to let them loose?

Ferrari’s race pace this season has put them in a very envious position indeed but still they are being hounded on all fronts as they use team orders to control the race pace and also so it seems to decide who will win the race. Ferrari have never flexed in the heat of all this criticism even in the aftermath of Austria they stood firm and defended their right to use team orders as they see fit. When Rubens Barrichello lifted off round that last corner to allow Michael Schumacher to take the win Ferrari set off one of the biggest scandals to rock F1. But it was Ross Brawn’s comments after the race that have been remembered the most.

Brawn told how there was no race to begin with, from the start both drivers were under orders from the pit-wall. In theory the team was controlling the pace and the decision as to who would win was already decided long before that last few laps. Off course Ferrari would have to admit they went about it the wrong way, their orders even shocking the most loyal of tifosi. But the team game has remained and the orders still remain, no racing each other.

So now with 2 races left to run is it time for the orders to be dropped and for Michael and Rubens to be left to their own devices? Well yes is the feeling amongst most Ferrari fans who are very interested to see how the pair shape up to each other in the best car. We have heard all the moaning from other fans about the orders already used. Ron and Patrick amongst others are not to be forgotten for their words, but Ferrari look set to keep the tired and tested formula of team orders. After the 1-2 in Monza Ross Brawn stated that they would be no change to the way they operate in the final two races. But with the Barrichello second place secure and everything wrapped up surely they can afford to let them loose?

Naturally Ferrari do not want to cause in-team struggles, they never have in recent years, Eddie Irvine was quickly shown the door when his grumbling began to filter back to Maranello and Ferrari at present are a team of harmony with Michael and Rubens pleased to help each other and delighted all the same no matter who wins. Ferrari would not like to create a situation such as at Williams where their drivers dislike each other and would gladly sacrifice team points to get one over on the other. But this situation is unlikely to arrive even without orders at Ferrari. Michael and Rubens are wise enough to realise what they are doing and a good open race between them does not need to result in feelings of hatred. They are close rivals and close friends and surely they can be trusted to race, but to race for the team also. It would be appalling to see a 1-2 finish go down the drain as the result of an over eager passing move by either driver.

The F2002 is a fantastic car no doubts about it, but we Tifosi really want to see it at it’s best. We don’t need to see it race for 70% of the race then cruise to the finish, we all know it is capable of doing that. What we want now in the final 2 races is for a fair race between Michael and Rubens with no pit-wall interference, give Ross an break and let him enjoy the racing as well without worrying how fast they are going for a change.
