The final 30 minutes session ahead of today’s race gives the teams their final chance to play around with the car set-up and also to test their race pace on their intended strategy. Both Ferrari’s put in their installation laps as usual. But it was the McLaren’s who set the pace early in the session. Problems seem apparent with the Williams launch control as Montoya stalls 3 times at the end of the pitlane as he practices his race starts.
Halfway through the session and neither Michael Schumacher or Rubens Barrichello are really fast, Schumacher down in 17th with Rubens in 3rd. But then they begin to move the times down as Schumacher goes fastest and Barrichello follows him into 2nd place. Barrichello is taking the chance to run the spare car and his race car back to back as once again he has the spare car available to him this weekend.
Once again in the warm up the Williams team are restricting the running of their drivers although Juan Pablo is lapping he is not making any impression on the front. Ralf Schumacher does not appear on track until the final 10 minutes and promptly goes off track as he finds his Williams a handful. Rubens Barrichello moves to the top of the timesheets with a 1.17.000 back in his race car. Barrichello continued to lap but his session was to end with a spin at turn 13 and in the process slowing down Michael who was on a faster lap.
As the session comes to an end Michael puts in a new fastest lap with a 1.16.864 once again the German finding a lot of time can be made up in the third sector. Schumacher has also been cleaning up his starting position on the dirty side of the grid. So Ferrari once again dominate in Hungary and fill the top two positions as has been the case all weekend. The race appears to be a mere formality.
