Fernando powers ferrari to first pole of the season

On the back of technical upgrades and support of thousands of screaming tifosi in the stands, Fernando Alonso grabbed the first pole position for the Prancing Horse at the Italian GP.

Fernando Alonso was so sure of his penultimate run, that clocked 1.21.962 secs, that he didn't pursue his final flying lap

Felipe Massa clocked the third best time and would be starting behind Briton Jenson Button who qualified second.

Debuting in front of the Italian fans, Alonso didn't disappoint as he topped Q2 session and was second to his team-mate in Q1.

On being asked, how he felt on his debut at Monza in Ferrari colours and getting the pole, he said, "It was nice surprise, and scared a bit when Jenson was quicker in sector-2 on his final run."

"As has been hapenning this season, we do a great lap, and in the final lap someone goes a hundredth of second faster, but it was different today."

"It's very tricky in Monza, with the kerbs and chicanes, you might do a normal lap, and you are the fastest, while you might overdrive on your flying lap."

Felipe Massa sounded positive about the developments working.

"In Q1 is was going quick with every lap, and hence I tried the same strategy in Q3, but there somehow it didn't work, but it's good to see the development working for Ferrari."

"Tomorrow the start would be very importan and it would be very tight at the first corner."

On asked about his championship chances if he wins tomorrow, Alonso said, "A win would be good, but consistency is more important, and even a podium finish would be good."
