Robert Kubica managed to finish second, only beated by 'Ant' Davidson in a Honda. The polish BMW's driver was the driver to complete more laps, a total of 39, and provided usefull data for the race drivers tomorrow

In the second free practice session for the US Grand Prix, held under overcast skies, at temperatures of about 29° C, the BMW Sauber F1 Team successfully continued its set-up work and tyre evaluations. Again, test driver Robert Kubica proved to be one of the quickest by finishing second.

Early in the session, during his first stint, the young Pole - who covered a total of 39 laps, thus being the busiest driver of the session - took the lead and regained it whenever he went out again. At the end of the day, he set his personal fastest lap time (1:12.809) on the first timed lap of his third stint, at halftime of the session. And only in the closing seconds, when Robert was on the way to completing his third long-run, he was beaten by Honda's test driver Anthony Davidson (1:12.013 minutes).

In this session, Nick Heidfeld and Jacques Villeneuve, the team's GP regulars, also contributed to the team's efforts to optimise the BMW Sauber F1.06's set-up and to gather further data for the tyre choice. On the way to doing so, Nick completed two stints and 14 laps respectively to set a personal fastest time of 1:13.725 minutes and finish 13th, while Jacques' fastest lap (1:13.857 minutes) meant 16th place, for the Canadian who completed 17 laps and three stints.

In tomorrow's third free practice session, from 15.00hrs BST, the BMW Sauber F1 team will complete its preparations for the remainder of the weekend.
