And R. Kubica finished 3rd. Between them was M.Schumacher, who stoped in the track at the end of the session, as he had a spin in the 1st sector. Hondas are looking strong so far, in spite of their low expectations for this weekend.

In the first free practice session for the US Grand Prix, Robert Kubica again proved to be one of the quickest. The BMW Sauber F1 Team test driver completed 31 laps and set a personal fastest lap time of 1:13.008 minutes, while Nick Heidfeld and Jacques Villeneuve did without completing timed laps.

The first free practice session at the 'Indianapolis Motor Speedway' started at 17.00hrs in perfect conditions, with temperatures of about 30° C. 27 of the 29 drivers used the opportunity to begin the set-up work and the tyre evaluations, but only 16 of them set timed laps. The quickest driver of the session was Anthony Davidson (Honda) who crossed the line in 1:12.083 minutes.

Apart from his installation lap, Robert completed a total of four stints and secured a top position right at the start. Afterwards, the young Pole improved his times consistently, and in his 4tth stint, with twelve more minutes to go, he set his personal fastest lap time to finish third.

His team-mates, Nick Heidfeld and Jacques Villeneuve, however, went out only for an installation lap. In the second free practice session, held from 19.00hrs BST, all the three BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers will continue the preparations for the US Grand Prix
