BMW sells F1 team to Peter Sauber! Redundancies announced...

By BMW Sauber F1
November 27 2009

Yesterday (Thursday), BMW AG reached an agreement with Peter Sauber regarding the sale of the BMW Sauber F1 Team. The contract is subject to the condition that the team has a starting place for the 2010 Formula 1 season.

Dr Klaus Draeger, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG with responsibility for Development, stated this morning: "We are very happy with this solution. This fulfils the most important requirement for a successful future for the team. Our relationship with Peter Sauber has always been excellent and marked by absolute respect. We would like to express our thanks to Peter Sauber and the whole team for the excellent cooperation during the recent four years."

Peter Sauber added: ""I am very relieved that we have found this solution. It means we can keep the Hinwil location and the majority of workplaces. I am convinced that the new team has a very good future in Formula One, whose current transformation with new framework conditions will benefit the private teams. Our staff here are highly competent and motivated, and I look forward to taking on this new challenge together with them. I would like to thank BMW for four shared years that have in the main been very successful."

This means that the sale to Qadbak Investment Ltd. that was initially planned will not be completed.

A further agreement with Peter Sauber proposes personnel cuts from the current level of 388 to around 250 employees. The restructuring of the team and compliance with future framework conditions have made this essential. Notices of redundancy have therefore been issued today. BMW AG regrets the need for these personnel cutbacks and will support the restructuring. At this moment in time, due to the aforementioned restructuring of the team, it is not possible to exclude the possibility of further redundancies in the near future.

Not so sure Phil. it seems now that Stefan GP is going to get Toyota's slot, leaving Sauber back to the July situation. Check this: http://www.f1network.net/main/s491/st151931.htm

What an eventful day!

Ah, and I hear Peter will be backed by American investors, which are no less than Penske and co, with Microsoft in the move too...winking smiley

What will FIA do??? What a mess!

Hey, What's the deal ? Are we in or out ? Today's my birthday and I don't need to be jerked around.
Peter buying it back, and getting on the grid would put icing on my cake.
Did you also notice who was driving the car in the picture F1Racing.net used to show the last colours of the non BMW Sauber team ?
That could be a sign of what's to come which would give many fans the Christmas present they have been wishing for including me.
Have a good day, sessions

The news I was hoping for grinning smiley Peter's back!

Hmmmmm......so the past 3-4 months were for not. Peter wanted to buy the team back from the start. Good work BMW. Very professional way to handle the future of the team/grid spot and workers.

Bravo and don't ever come back.

I wonder if this changes the prospects of Heidfeld being linked to the new Mercedes team. It's long been thought that Heidfeld wanted to stay with this very team, but had recently being strongly linked to the Merc drive. Now that BMW-Sauber has gone back to Sauber himeself (and not the Qadbak group) I am sure Heidfeld is more than considering remaining with this team.

We may yet see Raikkonen switch to Merc. I feel Kimi is more likely at Merc than Schumacher (rumours going round regarding MSC, don't really see it happening truthfully, but stranger things have happened) which of course closes the door on Heidfeld. Seems Merc has been delaying the announcement of their second driver (and their first driver was worst kept secret of Silly Season thus far) so we may have a surprise in store.

EDIT - as soon as I post, I read this: [f1.gpupdate.net]

Raikkonen reportedly close to signing on for Citroen WRC for 2010 - I doubt it will be the works team though, more likely Citroen Junior team. Loeb & Sordo are a great pairing for the manufacturers team.

More spice to the Silly Season hehe.

Great news indeed!

By the way, there's an interview with Peter Sauber. Apprently he does mention De la Rosa as on of the possibilities, and I've heard that in fact Peter has called PDLR (as has probably done with other drivers too off course!). Other drivers mentioned are Trulli (no please! haha), Buemi, Petrov...

Anyone could translate?:

The De la Rosa thing is on the 2nd vid (the interview)

Very good news for a great team. Pedro De La Rosa is good, but I hope on Heidfeld and Trulli. They are the best available drivers and should do very well with the team.

Raid-Phoenix, do we know for certain that the team will be called "Sauber"?

If so- is now a good time to purge this site of all reference to BMW!?

The name may change when the team is officially awarded the entry and the new name is announced. We don't know how how the team will be named, whether just Sauber, Sauber-Petronas, Sauber-Ferrari...or if the investors will have a take on the name too.

Found this translation highlight about a Auto Motor und Sport:

AMuS today did a piece on the BMW Sauber saga. They point out where BMW screwed up at 3 different crucial points.
Seems Peter's original offer was for 30mil Euro and BMW has now sold it to him for much less, since the team is now worth less, having lost most of the Bernie money, thanx to Munich.

QadBak was their first choice, the American Investment House was the second choice. When Qadback went south, they approached the Americans again but they had lost interest. Thus PS was the only option left if they wanted a decision this year.

Sauber feels very confident that they will be on the grid.
It didn't state this but it appears to me that Peter is still partnered with the Swiss investors.

He is very positive about the car, stating that the car is completely designed and they are currently building it and have already started the enhancements.
Looks good.

nice informations over there Raid... i like it.. it is quite weird when u read that Sauber is pretty confident that he'll get the grid slot...nothing being slowed down including cars development etc..etc.. in my opinion, people or person will not be at a very high level of confident if they don't have the exact things to support their claims... am i right Raid?
