Review of the 2007 F1 rule changes

Once more, the Formula One season 2007 will present several regulation changes. Prior to the start of the season, we review the main changes in order that you get fully informed ahead of the season start.

Tyres: In 2007, all Formula One teams will be starting with Bridgestone tyres. The BMW Sauber F1 Team was already able to gather important knowledge about the tyres during test drives prior to the season, and handled the new tyres well on track.

Free practice: The Formula One fans can look forward to more race action at the beginning of the Grand Prix weekend. Both Friday training sessions have been extended from 60 to 90 minutes. However, the teams are allowed to enter theses sessions with only two cars. The vehicles can either be driven by the two GP drivers or by one GP and one test driver.

Engines: In 2007, the engine of the BMW Sauber F1.07 must last two race weekends once more, rotational speed is restricted to 19.000 rpm. One new rule, however, enables the use of one further engine per vehicle during the first and second practice session, which means that changing the Friday engine does not result in loss of ten places on the starting grid.

Safety Car: Unlike last season, the drivers are prohibited from entering the pit lane as soon as the safety car comes out on the track. Pit stops are only permitted once all drivers have lined up behind the safety car.
