A few years back, having won the German F3 Championship, the F3000 Championship and with a McLaren test drive contract in his pocket, many thought that Nick Heidfeld was a World Champion in the making.

After four seasons in F1, during which time he has partnered Jean Alesi, Kimi Raikkonen, Felipe Massa and Heinz-Harald Frentzen, the young German fears his GP career could be at an end.

Heidfeld has never got over the fact that Mercedes, in partnership with McLaren, opted for Raikkonen when choosing a replacement for Mika Hakkinen, the German had always seemed destined to drive for the silver team.

Now, dropped by Sauber and with only the sole seat at Jaguar or a drive with Jordan or Minardi his only other option, the youngster is having to face up to the fact that his options for 2004 and beyond are bleak.

"It would be terrible if I am not in F1 next season," He told Bild am Sonntag. "I believe I am a good driver and I refuse to accept that it is suddenly all over."

So eager is the twenty-six-year-old to remain in F1, he is even willing to take a pay cut, though he was hardly one of the highest paid drivers in the sport to begin with.

"Money is not important for me," he said, "I just want to stay in the sport.

"I am only 26 and these are the worst months of my life."
