The silly season. Every year, rumours are heaped on rumours about which drivers are being targeted by which teams, which are about to be dumped, and which are going to be revived after spending time on the sidelines. The 2004-2005 period is no different.

With Jacques Villeneuve - the 1997 World Champion - returning to the fray, the pieces of Formula One’s 2005 driver line-up puzzle are beginning to fall into place. With Jaguar and Ford pulling out, there was the prospect of the remaining teams having to run three cars each, but Red Bull’s purchase of the team should avert that eventuality. The numbers are allocated with reference to final 2004 championship positions.
