John Reynolds has had the surgery on his right leg

Reigning British Superbike Champion John Reynolds underwent surgery to his broken right leg at the Queens Medical centre in Nottingham, which meant having a pin inserted as an internal splint.

Dr David Hahn, Consulting Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Queens Medical Centre, has been treating JR. He said “John had a multiple fracture of the right tibia approximately five centimetres above the ankle, as well as a broken fibula. Given the nature of the injury, a pin was inserted into his leg to act as an internal splint. The surgery went well and he is in good spirits. The progress he makes over the next three to four weeks will be very important in determining his overall recovery time.

“Assuming there are no complications arising from the procedure, it is likely that John will be discharged from hospital within the end of this week. We hope to mobilise him on crutches as soon as possible, and assist him not only in regaining use of the leg, but also his overall fitness to allow a successful return to racing at the earliest possible opportunity.”

John said, “There is no question in my mind I want to be back racing as soon as possible. I have had hard knocks before and have come back stronger. If anything, this injury is motivating me more than ever to get back to racing again. I have a title to defend, and I will do everything possible the doctors tell me to do to ensure I heal as fast as possible; and thanks to everyone for their support and confidence in me - it really helps.”

If there are no complications John will be discharged from hospital the end of this week, and will be mobilised on crutches as soon as possible to regain use of his leg and assist his overall fitness - to allow him a successful return to racing at the earliest opportunity.

John is no stranger to injury, and was successful in a quick return last year after breaking his collarbone at Thruxton. He returned to the following round to gain much needed points, and keep his lead in the championship alive.

John Reynolds returns home.

After undergoing surgery, John has now returned home to recuperate in more comfort, and to be with his family again, with a new cast on his leg to afford him more movement.

John said, “It is fantastic to be back home, although in hospital I was getting the best treatment. You can’t beat being at home when it comes to relaxing. More good news today for me was that Yukio-san has put his bike in fourth position on the grid [in Qatar’s World Superbike opener]. I will be cheering him on from the sofa tomorrow. Well done to Troy as well, for getting the second position on the grid. This reinforces my very positive feelings for the bike. I can’t wait to get back racing again.”
