AdrenalinX supported Supermoto rider Ady Smith put his Bracken KTM through its paces yesterday at the first round of the Motard Masters Series at Three Sisters, Wigan. Smith, who has just turned 40, is still at the top of his game and showed the young guns how it is done.
There are three rounds of the Masters series run by Ken Winstanley (KWS), BROXX and the AMCA, and if the first round was anything to go by the next two will certainly be just as entertaining. An extremely professional lay out saw the first round deemed a success.
Smith won both of his heats on the Saturday, which qualified him on the front row for the two SM1 races on Sunday. Fellow KTM rider Matt Winstanley managed to pull a comfortable gap in the first SM1 race, and left Ady Smith battling with Husky Sport rider Jay Smith (no relation) for second and third. It was Jay that got the upper hand on this occasion by 0.7 of a second.
It was Ady who was the man on the mission in the second SM1 race and, as Winstanley, Ady and Jay powered into the first corner, it was Winstanley who once again got the hole-shot. Winstanley lost the front end on the back section but soon remounted and carried on the chase. Ady and Jay both took advantage of this and gained two places. The battle was intense between the three riders, and they were changing positions on every lap. Winstanley made a tight passing manoeuvre on Jay on the off-road section, to take the lead, and allowed Ady through also, which took the two KTM riders to first and second.
Ady qualified second on the grid for what was looking to be an enthralling Super Final, with Winstanley on pole and Jay Smith third. As the flags went green Ady gained a fantastic start and took the lead into the first corner. It was hammer and tongs for the next eleven laps, and it looked as though Ady had gained the advantage - but Winstanley was gaining at a fast pace of knots. As the pair got tied up with back markers the race win could have gone either way, but it was to be Winstanley’s day as he took the Super Final win just ahead of Smith.
Commenting, Ady said, “It’s been a really good day for me today, and the first race meetings that I have ridden on Metzeler/Pirelli tyres. I’ve only been out on them a few times before now. I’m really happy with the results and hope I can take the race win at the next meeting here next month.”
