New memorial set for TT racing legend Joey Dunlop

Plans have now been lodged with the planners of Moyle District Council to erect a fitting memorial to TT legend Joey Dunlop, in his home village in Armoy, County Antrim.

It has been suggested that the memorial will be in the shape of Joey’s number 3, which is recognised the world over by his fans and non fans alike.

It has now been over four years since Joey’s death whilst racing in Estonia in the 125cc class, and it is only fitting that a memorial in his name be sited close to the Armoy Primary School. The village is synonymous with Joey’s name, and this is a fitting tribute to a legend in the motorcycling world.

The Memorial Garden, situated in Ballymoney close to Joey’s Bar, was sadly attacked by vandals this year, but is a pilgrimage for thousands of bike fans every year, along with the village of Armoy - where the famous ‘Armoy Armada’ was formed - consisting of Joey, brother Jim, brother-in-law Mervyn Robinson and Frank Kennedy.

Many of Joey’s famous exploits took place in Armoy, where throughout his racing career he would test ride his machinery on the local roads, running the gaunlet of being caught by the local police. With many fans visiting this now famous village and finding no tribute to the great man, it is now looking like a memorial to Joey is a certainty.
