WEBBER NICELY POISED FOR DEMANDING TURKISH GRAND PRIX

Mark Webber is perfectly positioned for tomorrow’s Turkish Grand Prix at Istanbul Park after setting the fourth fastest time in official qualifying. His Red Bull Racing team-mate, Sebastian Vettel, will line-up in pole position (his second of the season) with the two Brawn GP cars of Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello splitting the two Red Bulls in second and third places respectively.
“Q3 went well for us today,” said Webber afterwards, “there wasn’t much more I could get out of the car. It was very tight between Sebastian, the two Brawn GP drivers and I on lap times but I’m happy with my position for tomorrow’s race.
“It’s a really demanding race for us in hot conditions and it’ll be interesting to see who elects to start on what tyres. A lot of things can still happen and we’ll see how things play out but I’m aiming for a podium.”
It had been a fairly low-key start to the weekend for Webber on Friday with the “green” track conditions failing to give an indication of everyone’s true pace. McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen topped the times at the end of the second practice session but yet failed to make it into the top 10 in qualifying today while team-mate and reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton didn’t even make it past the first quali cut. Like RBR, there wasn’t much forthcoming from Brawn GP yesterday, the team going as far as to say they feared they had lost their competitive edge!
However, once everyone got down to the serious business of qualifying, the pecking order had more of a familiar look about it; Brawn, RBR and Ferrari emerging as the leading contenders and Toyota looking to be on a recovery after their disastrous Monaco outing.
Qualifying had a few moments for Webber although he always looked as though he would make it through to the top 10. He was third fastest after his first run in Q1 with a time of 1min 27.678s but slipped to seventh before improving to a 1min 27.466s to regain third for a blink of an eye before dropping to fourth at the flag. As it turned out, his earlier time would have been good enough to have made it into Q2 although it would have been a bit too close for comfort!
Webber posted a “purple” first sector on his initial timed lap in Q2 but having run wide at turn eight aborted his lap and returned to the pits. However, he made no such mistake on his second run, moving to third fastest with a 1min 27.416s before winding up sixth fastest.
A early banker of 1min 29.041s put Webber third fastest in final qualifying but his next timed run proved even quicker, Webber “purple” again in the first sector and going on to take provisional pole with a 1min 28.613s despite collecting a massive bug/insect directly in line of his vision on his visor! Meanwhile behind him, both Button and Vettel were trading purple sector times, first Button going to the top of the times with a 1min 28.421s only to be replaced by Vettel a few seconds later with a best lap of 1min 28.316s. Webber looked like he might hang onto third but he was demoted to fourth by Barrichello who stole in with a 1min 28.579s.

Mark should be aiming for the win, not merely a podium!
He certainly has the car, the fuel strategy and the opportunity to take the win.
Hopefully his comments are more about managing expections than what he really thinks he is capable of.

I think Second place would be the goal when he says podium.
I think Webber can leap frog Barra in the pits, while I think Vettel will lose track position big time in the first round of stops.

I dont think Mark's got enough of a fuel advantage over Vettel, especially as the field stretches out, to beat him. Two or three laps more at most.

Mark's got 2 laps more fuel than Seb.
That's not the point though. It's his mentality that is worryingly concerning as his target is a "podium" instead of the win.
You could see an Alonso or Hamilton in RB5 at this moment in time being completely ruthless and aiming for victory, not simply a podium.

Jez I think you would have to agree that Mark's actions speak louder than his words. I think this year he is as hungry as ever for a win. His pass on Button in the wet and retaking Alonso's position in Spain, I would suggest supports this view.

Anyways, he saw Mark dealing with the big issue when the feed cut to him on his final lap, it looked to me like he took care of a tear off into the braking zone of 7! Explains it now.

I can't belive some people think Mark is not out to win his first race
I am sure thats his aim every race lol...
And as said previously, last time I checked also, 1st,2nd and 3rd were all on the podium.
But lets not get to far ahead, there's still a long tuff race ahead and a job to do for both our lads..

The right hand side of the grid is the clean side, but Mark is mistaken in his belief that he's on it I'm pretty sure, unfortunately.

Yep i remember this, the drivers were complaining because pole was on the dirty side and yeah i think they swapped sides but i can't remember what track it was, maybe Turkey , not sure???

To everyone who 'doubted' Webber's drive by saying he was targeting a podium, perhaps he knows a little more about it than you all, and maybe he knew the Brawn was actually untouchable, so beating Vettel was his target, i.e. getting on the poduim (at that stage, assuming RB would be there too) in 3rd as best of the rest?
Have a look at his post-race interview again. Vettel is complainnig about the strategy and being beaten by Mark, who just looks the other way and you can see inside his head he is thinking "are you for real? You threw it off the road on lap 1 and then you know that, while a 3-stop was faster, it meant you had to pass Jenson on the road and you couldn't get it done...and somehow its the team's fault...come on kid"...

webber should of taken the young german out for some WWF smackdown training lol yeah the kid @#$%& me off, and CORRECT he is not michael, cause michael would have just acted way more proffessionally and known that he and only he stuffed it up and not to blame others , he needs some real life to get him a little maturity, not that i can talk, hehe, but then again i am not paid like these guys. He should also be listed as, youngest driver to podium ungratefully !!!

i realisei am ranting but one more, lol, he can't do this to his team , cause it may backfire and make his situation more terrible, because people run teams , not computers , real people ! webber knows this , not sure if vettel does yet. He probably honestly believes he is way better than mark , but he is not very very close but the way he acts he thinks he is webber and webber is pizza man (Antonio), but thats not the case! lol
