Sneak Peak of the RB5
By Ian Lockwood
February 6 2009
Red Bull Racing are due to launch the RB5 at Jerez on Monday, but if you can't wait until then, let Sebastian Vettel show you a computer generated version showing how the new car has been shaped by the 2009 rule changes.

We seem to have dumped the anvil and have "winglets" on the nose.
A bit boxy side pods but maybe all is not ready yet.

I didn't appreciate how long it took to load
I also thought Vettel's "Star Wars-Esque" Voice didn't do the video justice! For those without fantastic connections;

That front wing does look fantastic though. Webber was right.

It's interesting, also, hearing the extent of the potential of KERS. I can imagine a "Renault Startup system" type scenario where you find particular teams who are using KERs are able to pull off crazy overtaking moves whilst others are somewhat disadvatanged without.

Thanks growler, what a fantastic video, that was really cool, and the car looks awesome from the top view when it first changes into the 09 model!

The top edges of the nose seem to be very "shaped". Looks like an attempt to guide the airflow woithout using winglets. Ferrari-like vanes on the front of the sidepod with mirrors. Low and long. Higher nose. Low engine cover and exhaust well to the rear.
Looks great

Had problems with the direct link - thanks for the YouTube link, Keppel.
That is one sweet car design! - maybe the best on the grid. Now if only it races as fast as it looks.

Looks identical to the Toyota?
I liked that Vettel spun twice.
Also, it takes a while to make these videos I assume, so who knows if the car looks exactly like that.
Now that DCs gone, mirrors go outboard again, joy.

I recall reading that AFCA said that the RB5 would/could have an engine cover at the rear joined to the floor plate in a different way.
First thought was Renaults pancake cover covering the rear suspension, then I thought, maybe we'd see something even further along these lines like Newey designing a big round moulded rear end like a porsche 911 or something!
We shall see. The vid above looks exactly like the FIA directive/restrictions on '09 car shapes apart from the concave bonnet.
Meat and potatoes.
The real gains will come from the now competitive 'reliable' engine. Remember what happened when the RB4-STR got one of those! wow.

That rendering is a simple graphic presentation which in my opinion will not look like the RB5. It looked far too simple.
For me it was half Toyota, half Ferrari. The bent nose kink looked a little silly. But again, the car design will not be like this graphic at all.

i was unaware duffer that you had a direct line into the RBR design department that would enable you to make such positive and definitive statements re new design.

Look at the new RB5 the exhaust cannot be seen coming out of the top of the rear end , where are the exhaust?? it looks different to the other cars so far released have Red Bull put the exhaust under the car or something??

There is not even a diffuser on the car. I am just using common sense K1. We shall see.

So what about the NO exhaust outlets??? is that because its just a computer picture??? or will there really be NO exhaust outlets at the top at the rear on the RB5???

Even if the car is similar to that, and it probably will be given the regs, it will look different given proper lighting and so forth.
Whitey, the exhausts are there out the top of the engine cover. New rules or not, putting the exhausts through the diffuser sucks comparetively.

OK but they are a bit hard to see in the pic, they look like they are back a bit further than the other cars released so far!

The RB5 hasn't been released so who knows
Maybe the exhausts were too complex/big a pain in the ass for the modeller to bother with. Wait 24 hours and muse over the real car rather than this.

Basically a lot of the animation is from last years version, but with a new car. I think last year webber's span.
It takes ages to produce and render these so it does give a clue to the car but much may have changed since the modeling.
Can't wait till tomorrow, but I was expecting something a little more "different" after Webber's comments, but then he does want to extend his contract.

Wow they do to - I just saw this cap over at F1Tech:
I notice that the trailing edges flair out slightly creating another diffuser like effect! Very Nice!

You can just see one of the exhausts one the right hand side of Webbos car just below the rear wing elements - they certainly are a long way back compared to most of the other cars we've seen so far.

The other thing that is interesting is the sidepods, they look really boxy on the side, not sculpted at all like the renault.
