The final day of
the WillimasF1's three day test would see the team abandon the morning
session as the circuit was covered in a blanket of thick fog thus making it
impossible for the emergency helicopter to take off or land.. The team could
only start testing early in the afternoon.
Despite having gearbox problems Nico would set the fastest time of the day, and of
the week, a 1m:18.309. He would complete fifty seven laps. Team test driver
Alex Wurz would finish the day slowest, completing only twenty nine laps.
Like his team-mate Alex would also have gearbox problems with his car.
WilliamsF1 Technical Director Sam Michael said to autosport.com: "It is
quite normal to have teething problems when you have new car component, but
I think we are on top of it now."
It was the final test for WilliamsF1 team using the FW27C ca, as the 2006 FW28 will be unveiled next
Friday.
Michael added: "This is the last proper test with this car and after the
launch on Friday we have a two-day exclusive test in Valencia where all
three drivers will have a go in the new car and on Wednesday the second car
will arrive"
Sam Michael, Technical Director, WilliamsF1:
“Today we finished testing in Jerez with Nico and Alex, the last day before
we run the FW28 in Valencia, after the launch. Although the circuit was
closed in the morning due to fog, we managed to have a productive afternoon
testing various tyre options with Bridgestone to further improve our
understanding of the compound and construction requirements. Our Bridgestone
engineers have responded exceptionally well to the direction taken from the
November and December tests and we are seeing the results of that already.
We also verified several new mechanical components for reliability.”
Simon Corbyn, Head of F1 Race Engineering, Cosworth:
“Cosworth experienced no significant engine problems on the CA2006 in
Jerez this week. We were able to continue with the validation of updated
engine components, while we also made good progress refining engine control
strategies. Back in Northampton, we are flat out preparing engines for the
new FW28 car builds. Engineering progress and dyno test results continue to
be good and we will deliver a further engine performance gain when the
CA2006 is installed in the new chassis.” |
