BMW WilliamsF1 on course in 2002

For BMW Motorsport Director Dr Mario Theissen the team second place in the constructors title is exactly where the team aimed to be. Dr Theissen said: “After our long-term planning we’re now exactly reaching our target. Prior to the season we defined the second place as our target, and after ten races we are second in the Constructors' Championship. And we don’t want to lose that position.”

After the British Grand Prix the BMW WilliamsF1 team lies twenty four points ahead of their main rival McLaren, with a points tally of sixty one points. It has only taken then ten races to achieve this result compare to fifteen in the 2001 season.

Based on these figures it is clear that the team has improved over their 2001 performances, even if they have only secured one victory in the 2002 season so far.

But like every other Formula One team the WilliamsF1 team and BMW are not becoming complacent over their success. There is always a motivation within the team to perform better at every race as well as planning to achieve a better overall result come the 2003 season.

In regard to the 2003 season both BMW and WilliamsF1 are making the necessary preparations which will see them continue to improve. For BMW they are well into their preparations for the next season. Dr Theissen added: "The optimum overall concept of vehicle and engine has to be formed already at the very beginning of the development work. That phase for 2003 is already history. What is next is reliability, and after that comes increase in performance.”

As for the 2003 BMW engine Dr Theissen would not divulge saying that it is a case of wait and see. He said: “Of course our aim is always to increase performance. But one thing must be clear: We work within a fringe range. Already now our present engine is very powerful, and for many people it’s the most powerful of the Formula 1. As far as the new engine is concerned: just wait and see.”

With the team aiming to finish the 2002 season in second place in the constructors championship there is still a lot of work to be done to ensure that this result is achieved. If the team does come away with second it can be happy with their performance as they move to wards the ultimate goal of achieving both the drivers and constructors titles.
