Heidfeld third in 2nd Friday Practice in Australia. But team-mate Mark Webber could not match Nick's pace and was way down in fifteenth. Until reports come from the team it is difficult to explain this wide variation in times. At the front it would be McLaren's Pedro de la Rosa who would go fastest.

In a session
that would produce some confusing results for the BMW WilliamsF1 team we
would see Nick Heidfeld finish the session in third but team-mate Mark
Webber was way down in fifteenth.
With the sun out
the second session of practice for the Australian Grand Prix would see
McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen the first driver out onto the track. This was in
contrast to the earlier Friday practice where Kimi did not set a time. Ten
drivers were out on the track as Raikkonen sets a time of 1m:34.535.
Jordan's Narain Karthikeyan and Robert Doornbos, McLaren's Pedro de la Rosa
all immediately improve on Kimi's time. Toyota's Ricardo Zonta and Jordan's
Tiago Monteiro were also out on the track.
Raikkonen would improve with a time of 1m:32.808, but was still over two
seconds off the pace. With five minutes of the session run Pedro de la Rosa
was fastest with a 1m:29.589. Ricardo Zonta and Ralf Schumacher were in
second and third. Karthikeyan would spin his Jordan at the final turn.
Red Bull Racing would leap to the top of the times with David Coulthard
setting a 1m:28.867. Team-mate Liuzzi was close behind his team-mate with a
1m:28.926. de la Rosa would improve to now be in third with a 1m:28.937.
During the session it was announced that again the Minardi cars would not be
running.
Ralf Schumacher would move into first with a 1m:28.850, but de la Rosa take
this spot. But both were beaten by Red Bull's Christian Klien with a time of
1m:28.523. de la Rosa would improve with a 1m:28.625. Renault's Fernando
Alonso would go fastest with a 1m:27.940. Team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella
would also set a quick time with a 1m:28.425. BAR's Jenson Button was now in
third with a 1m:28.349. With fifteen minutes gone the yellow flags would come out when Liuzzi was to
go off in the first sector, putting his car in the gravel. He now had a long
walk back to his garage.
A 1m:27.752 would see Montoya go fastest while
Michael Schumacher could only manage the tenth fastest time of 1m:28.919.
Michael was pushing hard with his car running wide on several occasions. de
la Rosa and Monteiro would have a coming together, with the McLaren driver
been pushed off the circuit but was able to recover.
Alonso would move into first with a 1m:27.587, while BMW WilliamsF1 driver
Mark Webber would move into thirteenth with a 1m:29.061, but he would
quickly improve to set a time of 1m:28.504 to now be in fifth. The level of
track activity was a major improvement over the earlier session. Sauber's
Felipe Massa was now tenth. A 1m:28.320 for Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello
sees him move in fourth. But Ruben's would runs wide at turn ten. de la Rosa
would move into the top spot with a 1m:27.262.
But a 1m:27.528 would see Coulthard snatch this position away from the
McLaren driver. Nick Heidfeld would moves into seventh with a time of
1m:27.951. Mark Webber was in tenth with a 1m:28.323. With twenty minutes of
the session run Coulthard would further improve with a time of 1m:27.298.
Team-mate Christian Klien was now ninth fastest with a 1m:28.069. Jenson
Button would move into third with a 1m:27.565. Coulthard would go even
faster with a 1:27.128, while Klein was now in fourth with a 1m:27.544.
But Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella would move ahead of Coulthard with a
1m:27.116. Just as quickly Kimi Raikkonen would set a rapid lap with a
1m:26.692. He would improve his time to a 1m:26.311, to be eight tenths
ahead of his nearest rival. Montoya would join Kimi at the front, going
fastest with a
1m:26.227. A 1m:27.744 would see Barrichello way down in eleventh, while
team-mate Michael was in eighteenth. Barrichello would improve to be in
fourth with a 1m:27.002. Massa was now in third with a 1m:26.357. Michael
was now up to seventh with a 1m:27.236.
Ralf Schumacher would go off the track but was able to recover. Coulthard
was now in fifth with a 1m:27.017. Button was in seventh with a 1m:27.235.
Michael Schumacher was now in fourth with a 1m:26.776. Team-mate Barrichello
would snatch this position from his team-mate with a 1m:26.639. But Michael
would take it back with a 1m:26.619.
With fifteen minutes left in the session Toyota's Jarno Trulli was now in
ninth with a 1m:27.195, while Fisichella would run wide through turn one.
Further into his lap and Fisichella would have a major moment when he spun
at turn nine. He would return to the track. Things were not looking good for
Mark Webber as he seemed to be struggling for pace. He would set a time of
1m:27.703, only good enough for fifteenth.
With less than then minutes remaining Montoya was also having his own
difficulties after running onto the grass through the turn two apex.
BAR's
Takuma Sato was way down in seventeenth. At the front it would be Michael
Schumacher who would set a blistering time of 1m:26.081 to go fastest. Zonta
would
improve to now be in sixth with a 1m:26.808. Team-mate Ralf Schumacher was
in seventeenth with a 1m:27.618.
Alonso moved into sixth with a 1m:26.562. Button was in eighth. A 1m:25.376
from de la Rosa would see him go fastest. In an encouraging moment for the
BMW WilliamsF1 team Nick Heidfeld would move into second with a 1m:25.940.
Team-mate Webber was down in fifteenth. Nick's time would be beaten by a
time of 1m:25.676 from Raikkonen. So at the end of the session we had
McLaren in first and second with a BMW WilliamsF1 in third. |
