The BMW WilliamsF1 team would finish in 6th & 9th in the Pre-Qualifying session for the 2004 HUngarian GP. Juan Pablo would lead his team-mate Pizzonia. It was a session that appeared to favour the Bridgestone runners with the top four positions taken by the Japanese manufacturer.

For the BMW WilliamsF1 team pre-qualifying would see Juan Pablo and
Antonio finish in sixth and ninth positions. For Juan Pablo his time
would be 1.3 seconds behind the fastest time. The conditions, based on
other Michelin runners seemed to be favouring the Bridgestone supplied
teams. They would finish the session with four of the Japanese tyre
companies drivers at the front.
The
opening qualifying session would see Michael Schumacher take to the
track first. His lap time of 1M:19.107 would easily beat the time set in
the final practice session by Jenson Button. Next would be Button and he
was two tenths down after the first sector. He would go on to finish
0.771 seconds behind Michael with a time of 1m:19.878.
The third driver out was Renault's Fernando Alonso. He was down after
both the opening two sectors to finish in third with a time of
1m:20.019, a full second behind Michael. For McLaren's David Coulthard
his lap would see him, like Alonso lose time to Michael, to finish two
seconds off the pace with a lap of 1m:21.192.
For BMW WilliamsF1's Juan Pablo Montoya his lap would see him just ahead
of Michael after the first sector. But he would lose almost half a
second in the second sector. He would finish with a time of 1m:19.821 to
move into second. Mark Webber, who has struggled this weekend, would
start his lap and he was a second slower after sector one, 1.7 seconds
after sector two, to finish his lap with a time of 1m:21.452. this was a
massive 2.3 seconds behind the leading Ferrari.
Now it was the turn of Pizzonia. Sector one and he was three tenths
down, sector two and he was a now down 0.7 seconds. He would finish in
fourth with a time of 1m:20.019. For BAR's Takuma Sato his lap would see
him produce a good result moving into second, pushing Juan Pablo down
into third. But Michael's time was looking very secure. next was
Sauber's Giancarlo Fisichella. His lap would see him edge out Sato
moving into second. A great result
for the Japanese driver.
The
second Jaguar of Christian Klein would finish his lap down in tenth. It
has been a poor showing from the Jaguar team this weekend. With Alonso
in seventh team-mate Trulli was next out and he would be close to
Michael in sector one but like others lose time in sector two. He would
finish his lap with a time of 1m:19.879 to be sixth.
Now it was the turn of Michael's team-mate Barrichello and Rubens would
go fastest in the opening two sectors. He would finish his lap with the
quickest time, a stunning lap of 1m:18.463. He was over half a second
faster than Michael. Another Bridgestone runner was Massa and his lap
would see him move into third. team-mate Fisichella was now in fourth,
making it four Bridgestone runners at the front.
Now it was Panis's turn but his lap would see him down with the Jaguar's
in eleventh. Jordan's Pantano would move into twelfth. Minardi's Zolt
Baumgartner would finish his lap in sixteenth. Team-mate Bruni would
beat Zolt to move into sixteenth. For Nick Heidfeld his lap would see
him easily beat his team-mate with an impressive eleventh. Now it was
the turn of McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen.
The Finn would come out and after sector one was two tenths down, sector
two and he would be a a second down. he would finish his lap with a time
of 1m:20.066 to move into a disappointing tenth. The last driver out
would be new-comer Ricardo Zonta. His lap would see him finish with a
time of 1m:20.199 to go twelfth. So that concluded the opening
qualifying with the Ferrari's and the Bridgestone teams looking very
strong. |
