With
last year's pole position time a 1m:15.1 lap set by Montoya the final
qualifying session would get under way with Minardi's Zsolt Baumgartner
first out. WilliamsF1's Juan Pablo Montoya and Antonio Pizzonia, would
be last out. Zolt would set a time of 1:18.400 to lead the times, if
every so briefly. Team-mate Gianmaria Bruni was next and his lap was
good enough to see him move ahead of his team-mate with a time of
1m:18.055. Jordan's
Nick Heidfeld was the third driver out. He would he shatter the times
set by the Minardi's, with a lap of 1m:16.310, to go fastest. Following
Nick was The second Jordan of Giorgio Pantano. With a time of 1m:16.192
he would move ahead of his more experienced team-mate. Making up the
first group of five was Toyota's Cristiano da Matta. The Brazilian would easily beat the Jordan's time finishing with a 1m:15.454, which is far from impressive in the all-new TF104B. The next group consisted of Mark Webber, Christian Klien, Takuma Sato, Rubens Barrichello, and Michael Schumacher. Webber was out on the circuit. His lap would see him fastest through the opening sector, to finish with a time of 1m:14.802 to go fastest. Klien was next up in the second Jaguar. He would cross the line with a 1m:15.011 to be second, but two tenths behind team-mate Webber. Sato was next up in the first of the BAR Hondas. He would finish his lap with a time of 1m:14.287 to be ahead of Webber. Barrichello was out and he would easily set the fastest first sector time. He would lose time to Sato in the second but would finish with a time of 1m:14.278 to go fastest, but way of the pace. Michael Schumacher would start his lap but his lap would see him less than a tenth up on his team-mate through sector one. But he would turn this around in the final two sectors to finish with an amazing time of 1m:13.306. Michael was able to find half a second in the final sector. The next five drivers out were Fisichella, Massa, Raikkonen, Trulli, and Panis. Fisichella started his lap and he would lose a full second to Schumacher through sector two. His lap would finish with a time of 1m:15.395 to see him in sixth. Team-mate Massa was next out. A 1m:15.616 for the Brazilian would see him finish in eighth. Raikkonen
was next and after securing pole at Silverstone was looking to repeat
his performance. He would be two tenths up after sector one, but he
would lose time in the second to finish with a time of 1m:13.690 to be
in second position. Trulli was out in the first of the Renaults. His lap
would see him lose four tenths through the second finishing in third
with a time of 1m:14.134. Panis would start his lap in the all-new
TF104B and would lose out through the final two sectors to move into
sixth, a time of 1m:14.368.The final group was Coulthard, Alonso, Button, Antonio Pizzonia, and Juan Pablo Montoya. For Coulthard his lap would see him he fastest through sector one. He would lose two tenths through the second and in the final would slips behind his team-mate and finish third with a disappointing time of 1m:13.821. Now it was Alonso's turn and the Spaniard would he would be fastest of all through the second sector, but with a poor third sector would slip down the order to finish in fourth with a time of 1m:13.874. For Jenson Button even if he goes fastest he will start ten places back. So he would start his lap and be up after sector one, lose time in sector two, to finish with a time of 1m:13.674 to be second. Pizzonia would start his lap with Ralf Schumacher present at the WilliamsF1 garage. After his encouraging pre-qualifying time the Brazilian would struggle in final qualifying. His lap would only be good enough for tenth, a disappointing result for Antonio. Now it was all down to Juan Pablo. His lap would see him up on Michael's time in sector one and two, but the final sector would see him drop behind to finish with a 1m:13.668, which would see him in second. Despite this it was still a great effort by Juan Pablo. |
