Trulli, triumphant for Renault in Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix, was the 15th
Italian to win a Formula One race. Only Brazilian Rubens Barrichello, who
had his first victory after 124 starts, has had to wait longer for his first
win. Trulli's came after 117 starts. Trulli was also the 95th driver in
Formula One history to win a race. Ferrari's Michael Schumacher, who had won the first five races of the year, failed to set a record as the first driver to start a season with six victories in a row. Trulli's win ended Ferrari's run of success dating back to last August, eight wins in a row. The last time they were beaten was the Hungarian Grand Prix of 2003 when Renault's Spanish driver Fernando Alonso took the chequered flag. Renault now have 17 wins to their credit. Ferrari have 172, ahead of McLaren on 137 and Williams on 112. Schumacher has a record 75 wins. Briton David Coulthard, with 13, is the next most successful active driver. Ferrari have won three of the last four races at the Nürburgring, although Williams and Ralf Schumacher finished first last year. Schumacher has won the European GP three times. Five of the 10 teams have a local interest in the European Grand Prix: Ferrari with Michael Schumacher, Williams with Ralf and engine partners BMW, McLaren with Mercedes, Jordan through local driver Nick Heidfeld and Toyota who are based in Cologne. Trulli was the second first-time pole setter in six races this season, the other being BAR's Jenson Button at Imola. Schumacher has started all the rest on pole. Monaco was the first time the German had not started on the front row this year. Schumacher needs six more pole positions to equal Brazilian Ayrton Senna's record of 65. Schumacher and Alonso's crashes in Monaco ended Ferrari and Renault's boast to be the only teams to have scored points with both cars in every race this season. Button, Barrichello and Trulli are now the only drivers to have scored in every race. Minardi are now the only team without a point after Toyota and Jordan scored for the first time this year. However Jaguar, Toyota, Jordan and Minardi have yet to finish on the same lap as the race winner. Minardi's Italian driver Gianmaria Bruni celebrates his 23rd birthday on race Sunday. |
