Valencia Test 03:05:2002 Final Day

The BMW WilliamsF1 Team concluded a four day test at the Valencia circuit in Spain today ahead of the forthcoming Austrian Grand Prix. The test was conducted by Juan Pablo Montoya, and test team driver Antonio Pizzonia.

The weather conditions were generally good but with an exceptional downpour on Thursday afternoon, the test team worked through an extensive programme that focused on tyre work with Michelin, engine mapping and brake testing. For the final day the track was wet which meant the team focused on wet weather tyre compounds.

During the week the BMW WilliamsF1 Team also ran a second car for aero testing in Danielson.

Sam Michael, WilliamsF1 Chief Operations Engineer, had the following comments: "At the Valencia test we concentrated on tyre testing and various mechanical and aero components for upcoming races such as Monaco. We also had some time to spend on wet and intermediate set-ups due to occasional bad weather."

Dr Mario Theissen, BMW Motorsport Director, added: "For us it was a valuable and detailed four-day test. We learnt much regarding the onward development of our BMW engine, but the main focus of the test was chassis and tyre work."

Of the other teams present Renault's Jarno Trulli was the quickest during the final day of testing at Valencia. The Italian managed to put in a 1m:15.524 lap in wet conditions.

McLaren's Alex Wurz ended up in 3rd today, almost a second behind Trulli, who, together with Alonso, had another successful day for Renault. Pedro de la Rosa took 4th, but was already somewhat behind the best times.

His team-mate Eddie Irvine had a spin in the morning, but was only one of many today. Juan Pablo Montoya brought the session to a halt twice, was consequently not competitive in the wet.
