New FW24 for midseason

In order to respond to Ferrari's F2002 it has been reported, in Autosport magazine, that the BMW WilliamsF1 team is looking in to redesigning their current Fw24 chassis. This design process will look at not only a new suspension layout but will also be looking at a new gearbox for the car.

The F2002 incorporates a ultra-compact transmission which allows for faster gear changes and has allowed for the narrow design of the rear of the F2002.

It has been reported that the WilliamsF1 team has already commissioned German specialists Hörs Technologies to design and build the new transmission.

In the area of suspension WilliamsF1 is believed to be considering a twin-keel front suspension layout, rather than using the central locating point for the lower front wishbones.

Even with these moves one person who feels that it is the overall package where the BMW WilliamsF1 team is been let down is BMW Motorsport Director  Gerhard Berger.

Berger said: "It is not one area we need to improve it is everywhere," he said. "The engine, gearbox, aerodynamics and tyres."
