| Since the arrival of
Ferrari's F2002 the impact that this car has had has seen a rethink on the
part of the BMW WilliamsF1 team as to what is needed to now challenge
Ferrari.
For Patrick Head, BMW WilliamsF1
Technical Director, it is now the case that the team must improve but that
in the next few races the WilliamsF1 team will be closer to Ferrari than
many think.
The last race in Spain would see Ferrari's Michael Schumacher dominate the
race with WilliamsF1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya coming second. Many feel that
such was the dominance of Ferrari's win that the season and championships
will be wrapped up as early as half way through the season.
This is not a view shared by Head, who does not believe that Ferrari will
always have such a performance advantage at every race.
In an interview for the BBC Head said: "We will be a lot closer at the next
race in Austria, but we are going to have to improve a lot very quickly in
order to get back into a competitive position."
"We expected to be some way behind in Spain so we are not too surprised."
Head was the first to admit that the WilliamsF1 team has suffered from the
fact that their package was not as complete as Ferrari's.
Head added: "'There is
obviously a deficiency in the complete package and we have to make sure we
improve it because we don't want to be quick at some tracks and slow at
others." |
