French GP Saturday 1st Practice

The opening Saturday practice for the 2003 French Grand Prix was very much a case of things returning to normal with the top teams returning to their usual positions. The teams were greeted by sunny conditions which were predicted to last all day covering both practice and qualifying sessions.

For the BMW WilliamsF1 team both drivers would be in the top six with Ralf third and Juan Pablo fifth. It was an uneventful session with both drivers aiming to maximise their time in setting up their cars for the dry after yesterdays wet weather.

Montoya in his garageAt the top if the times it would be Renault's Fernando Alonso, with a lap time of 1:16.076. Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello was second by only one-tenth of a second.

Ralf claimed third while brother Michael, who was 0.419 seconds down on Alonso in fourth. Michael was to have one moment when he cut the Nürburgring chicane in his second lap. WilliamF1s' Juan Pablo Montoya and McLaren-Mercedes driver David Coulthard took fifth and sixth respectively with Kimi Raikkonen seventh in the second McLaren.

Toyota pair Cristiano Da Matta and Olivier Panis were both in the top-ten as they finished eighth and tenth with Renault driver Jarno Trulli ninth.

After the legal problems of yesterday both BAR drivers, Jenson Button and Jacques Villeneuve, were able to get in some needed practice session ending thirteenth and fourteenth.

After their performance in Friday's qualifying the Minardi team came back to reality with both Verstappen and Wilson at the bottom of the times.

Jaguar's Antonio Pizzonia left the track at the Imola chicane, while Button parked his car by the side of the track at the end of the practice with a smoking engine.
