In a brilliant way to start off the extended partnership between the
WilliamsF1 team and BMW the teams drivers would finish the 2003 European
Grand Prix firs and second with Ralf securing his first race win of the
season. For Ralf this maintains his great record of having scored points in
every rave so far this season. What a wonderful performance by the team and
drivers
The
start of the European Grand Prix would see Sauber's Nick Heidfeld start from
the pits. The start would see Raikkonen lead Ralf followed by Michael
Schumacher in third, then Barrichello.
For Raikkonen he was the fastest driver setting a time of 1m:33.447.
Raikkonen was the only driver lapping in the 1.33's. Juan Pablo was in fifth
ahead of the two Renault drivers, with Trulli in front of Alonso. By lap
four Michael Schumacher was close behind his brother Ralf challenging for
second place, with Rubens closing in on Michael. Lap six and Raikkonen had
increased his lead, now more than 5 seconds ahead of Ralf Schumacher.
The following lap would see him set another fastest lap with a lap time of
1m:.33.310. At the back of the field lap eight would see Villeneuve pass
Verstappen before the last chicane. Heidfeld would also pass Verstappen but
for Villeneuve he would spin and loses two places in what must be a
frustrating race for him.
Another
fastest lap for Raikkonen with a lap of 1m:32.983. Lap nine and Jordan's
Ralph Firman would make a short pit stop. The following lap Fisichella would
also stop and return behind his team-mate. Ralf was keeping his brother
behind him, but by lap thirteen Raikkonen had more than an 8-second lead
over Ralf. For Villeneuve things got worse when he damaged his front wing on
the plastic cone at the chicane. Lap fourteen and Jaguar's Mark Webber would
pit, followed by Frentzen. The next lap would see Villeneuve and Trulli
stop. Villeneuve would also have a new front wing fitted. Lap fifteen and
Raikkonen would pit, with the Ferrari team getting ready for Michael.
Lap sixteen and Barrichello would make a quick stop of 8.7 sec. Next lap it
would be Juan Pablo's turn, joined by Coulthard and Alonso. The three would
return to the circuit in the same order. Lap nineteen and Ralf had still not
pitted.
Lap twenty one and Ralf finally stops, with the team making adjustments to
the front wings. It would be a very quick stop, 7.7 sec, and he would join
the race in front of Michael. Raikkonen was still leading, 4.4 sec in front
of Ralf.
Lap
twenty five would see Panis is in a fight with Jenson Button for tenth
place. Toyota team-mate Da Matta would makes a second stop but something was
wrong and he would be stationary for 14.8 sec. On the same lap we would see
smoke coming from the he back of Raikkonen's McLaren and he would retire
from the lead with Ralf taking over at the front.
Lap twenty six and Ralph Firman would make his second pit stop. Michael was
starting to close in on Ralf but by lap thirty it had stabilised somewhat.
For Juan Pablo he was able to start to reduce the gap to Rubens. Lap thirty
two and Frentzen would pits, 6.8 sec. At the front the gap between the
Schumacher brothers was 4.3 sec.
Lap thirty four would see the two Renault drivers running in a close
formation, with Alonso still ahead of Trulli. Lap thirty five and Michael
would go into the pits, stopping for 9.7 sec. He would return right behind
Coulthard. Lap thirty seven and Barrichello would also stop, 9.4 sec. But on
the same lap Trulli would retire and Panis would spin into retirement.
Alonso would make his pit stop in 8.3 sec.
Lap
thirty nine and Juan Pablo pits, his stop in 8.3 sec. He would return in
front of Barrichello. The following lap it would be the turn of Ralf to
stop. 8.5 sec. Michael Schumacher was now third, with Coulthard who had yet
to make his stop second. Lap forty one and Coulthard was in the pits, but he
a small mistake trying to leave before the work was completed losing him
some time. At the front we would see Juan Pablo and Michael make contact as
Montoya tried to pass the Ferrari driver on the outside. Michael would spin
and was to get stuck in the gravel trap with his engine still running but
the marshals would push him out and he would get back on the circuit. Lap
forty three and Michael was now in sixth position.
BAR's
Jenson Button was now in the points in eighth. Lap forty six and Coulthard
would still be trying to pass Alonso, without success. For Jaguar's Mark
Webber he was now up to seventh. The fight between Alonso and Coulthard
would continue with the pair almost making contact at the chicane but it
would appear that Alonso was having some problem with his brakes. At the
front lap fifty would see Ralf still leading from team-mate Montoya. With
twelve laps left to go both drivers had seemed to have eased off a little
bit. By lap fifty two we would see both WilliamsF1 drivers are lapping in
the 1.33'sec. For Jacques Villeneuve he would retire after a terrible race,
while running in fifteenth position.
For the Jordan team their drivers had yet to make their third stop and on
lap fifty three Fisichella would stop, 13 seconds. Lap fifty five would see
Da Matta's Toyota blow its engine forcing the Brazilian into retirement.
In the closing stages of the race it was announced that the race stewards
were looking at the incident between Juan Pablo and Michael. Lap fifty seven
and Coulthard would try and pass Alonso but would go off the track and into
the gravel trap to retire. As a result Michael would move into fifth place.
The final Lap would see Ralf well in control, with Juan Pablo second. In
what was a terrific race for the WilliamsF1 team its drivers would finish
first and second, with Barrichello finishes third in front of Alonso,
followed by Michael Schumacher who would try and pass the Spaniard at the
last moment.. |
