The session would end with Toyota's Olivier Panis setting the fastest time, to be just 0.027 seconds ahead of Jaguar's Mark Webber. For McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen he would finish third, 0.063 seconds behind with Renault pair Jarno Trulli and Fernando Alonso fourth and fifth.

Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia was sixth for Jaguar with David Coulthard seventh, German Ralf Schumacher eighth, Panis' Brazilian Toyota team-mate Cristiano da Matta ninth and Ferrari's Michael Schumacher completing the top ten.

Sauber's Nick Heidfeld would knock off his front wing at the chicane with eighteen minutes of the hour-long practice gone, bringing out the red flag. Both Webber and da Matta would spin their cars, at turns one and two respectively.

With just four minutes of the session left Rubens Barrichello would also damage his front wing when he hit a plastic marker at the chicane.
