After the final qualifying in Canada it would be an all BMW WilliamsF1 front row. Ralf would set the fastest time with Juan pablo 2nd. Ralf would be a 3/10 of a second up on his team-mate. After the difficulties in the first qualfying and practice sessions this was a very good result for the team.

After the final qualifying for the 2003 Canadian Grand Prix we would be
greeted with the sight of an all BMW WilliamsF1 front row, for the first
time this season. Ralf Schumacher would set the pole time with Juan Pablo
second, which was a reversal of their 2002 positions.
With the rain stopped and the track almost dry everywhere the times that
would be set in Saturday's qualifying were to be considerably faster than
that of Friday. But there was a chance of rain. For Ralf Schumacher the
warm-up session prior to qualifying would see him set the fastest time so
there was a chance that he would qualify well.
BAR's Jacques Villeneuve would be the first out and in a mistake free lap
would set a time of 1m:17.347. Next came Renault's Jarno Trulli, who would
have to start in the T Car after crashing his race car. Jarno would go
faster than Jacques, with a time of 1m:16.718.
Next would be Jordan's Giancarlo Fisichella who, after a several mistakes
running wide, would be 1.8 off the fastest time after sector two. He would
end up 1.3 seconds slower than Trulli. Jaguar driver Antonio Pizzonia
would go second with a lap of 1m:17.337. For Toyota's Cristiano Da Matta,
who has had a difficult time with his car, set an encouraging time to go
second just one tenth behind Trulli.
After his quick time in the warm-up Ralf would be looking to set a quick
time and this is what he did. He would set a lap time of 1m:'15.529, which
was a huge 1.2 seconds faster than Trulli's time. For BAR's Jenson Button
his time would see him go into seventh. He would have one big moment when
he was to miss the chicane. He would be 2.6 seconds behind Ralf. So far it
was looking very much like the Michelin supplied drivers had the upper
hand.
For Minardi's Justin Wilson he would move into eighth but next would be
Juan Pablo Montoya and on his flying lap he would make one small mistake
but with his BMW engine pushing the FW25 up to 334.4 km/h coming back to
the chicane he was able to set a time of 1m:15.923 to go second. Compare
this to the 326.1kmh from Button's Honda engine.
For Minardi's Jos Verstappen he would set an encouraging seventh fastest
time but with ten drivers still left to run he would find himself near the
back of the grid. Toyota's Olivier Panis was the first of the next group
of drivers to go out and he would set a time of 1m:16.569 to go third.
Jaguar's Mark Webber would lose time in the second sector, combined with a
poor top speed of only 315kmh and he would go third with a lap time of
1m:16.182. For McLaren's David Coulthard he would start his flying lap but
would lose time and would be 1.5 seconds behind Ralf in seventh. Having
said that it is believed that he was running a heavy fuel load. For
Sauber's Heinz Harald Frentzen his lap would see him push Coulthard down
to eighth as he
slotted into seventh.
Next came McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen and in a very big mistake would crash,
spinning his car at the first corner and backing his car into the tyre
wall damaging its rear wing and suspension. Kimi was uninjured but for him
his race will start from the back of the grid. That is the second time he
has gone off in final qualifying so far this season.
Renault's Fernando Alonso would go out and despite some aggressive driving
he would finish in third with a lap time of 1m:16.048. He appeared to
suffer from understeer during his lap and came close to hitting the wall
on one occasion. For an engine that is supposedly down on power Alonso was
able to set a top speed of 325.7kmh.
For Jordan's Ralph Firman his lap would be ruined when he would run wide in
the esses, finishing last 1.8 seconds behind Ralf. For Sauber's Nick
Heidfeld his time would see him move into tenth 1.5 seconds behind Ralf.
Next would be Michael Schumacher and could be beat the WilliamsF1 driver
into pole.
But he would make a small error in the esses and lose 0.15 seconds after
sector one. He would lose a further time in sector two to be 0.315 seconds
down. By the end of the lap his time would only be good enough for third
0.488 seconds behind Ralf. The last driver to go out was Rubens
Barrichello and he would be 0.339 down after the first sector. At the end
of the lap Rubens would finish only in fifth six tenths of the pace.
In a great result for the BMW WilliamsF1 team it would give us an all
WilliamsF1 BMW front row.
