Brazilian GP Saturday Qualifying |
| |
| After
the final qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix both Ralf Schumacher and
Juan Pablo Montoya would be in the top ten with Ralf sixth and Juan Pablo
ninth. Without knowing the exact strategy that the team is going to use
come the race on Sunday it is very hard to judge these laps.
But having said that they
were an improvement over their qualifying performances in Malaysia. Ralf
and Juan Pablo were only three and four tenths behind the pole time so the
prospects for the race are looking very favourable. At least for Ralf he
has the satisfaction of out qualifying his team-mate after all the reports
that the team was not happy with his performances in the first two races.
Qualifying would be run on
a a dry track with BAR's Jenson Button the first driver out. He would end
up slightly slower than this morning with a lap time of 1m:14. 504. Next
would be Minardi's Justin Wilson with a time of 1m:16.586.
After Ralph Firman it would then be Juan Pablo Montoya's qualifying run.
He held pole here last year and he would set a time of 1m:14.223 which
would see him go fastest. Next out was Sauber's Nick Heidfeld. Heidfeld
would make a small mistake in the 2nd sector which would see his time good
enough only for third.
With reports that tomorrow's race may be run in the wet it appeared that
some drivers were running more wing than normal. Into fifth would go Jos
Verstappen but not for very long as Jordan's Giancarlo Fisichella would go
faster than Juan Pablo to take provisional pole with a lap of 1m:14.191.
Next was Ralf Schumacher and he would just as quickly take pole from
Fisichella with a lap of 1m:14.124, but there still were many quick
drivers yet to come. Renault's Jarno Trulli would be next out and he would
go faster than Ralf, a lap of 1m:13.953. Trulli was to make up a lot of
time in the second sector. Juan Pablo was currently in fourth but he would
drop down the grid. Toyota's Christano Da Matta would move into eighth
with a lap of 1m:15.641.
So with ten drivers left to run it was Trulli in pole with Ralf second.
Sauber's Heinz Harald Frentzen would go seventh. He would be followed by
Renault's Fernando Alonso. He would be three tenths of a second slower
then Trulli after the 2nd sector and end up been only fifth.
Jaguar's Antonio Pizzonia would complete his flying lap and move into
tenth. This was to be disappointing considering the Jaguar teams strong
showing in Brazil. But Mark Webber would be the last driver to qualify.
For BAR's Jacques Villeneuve his lap would start off well but he would
lose one second in the second sector and only could manage eighth behind
Button and Heidfeld.
Next was Toyota's Olivier Panis, but the Frenchman would make a mistake
and out brakes himself. He would finish in tenth. Trulli was still on pole
but the McLaren and Ferrari drivers were yet to run.
The first of these drivers would be Ferrari's Michael Schumacher. He could
not match the pace of Trulli and would finish in third with a lap of
1m:14.130. Michael was slow in the first sector and was not able to pull
the margin back. But Trulli's pole would not last long as McLaren's David
Coulthard would set the fastest time with a lap of 1m:13.818. Coulthard
would quickly be joined on the front row by team-mate Raikkonen who set a
time of 1m:13.866 to go second. If he had not lost some time on a kerb he
would have taken provisional pole.
But McLaren's moment of glory would be spoilt when Ferrari's Rubens
Barrichello would set the quickest time with a lap of 1m:13.807. His
Brazilian home crowd was to go crazy with their favourite on pole. The
final runner who could take pole away from the Brazilian was Jaguar's Mark
Webber and even though he put in a fantastic lap he would only go third
fastest. Webber would set the fastest first sector time but lost time on
the rest of the lap. |
