Abu Dhabi GP: Williams Martini drivers in top ten in FP2

Team Summary:
As the sun started to set the second Friday practice session for the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix would get underway. Grosjean would be first out with the soft tyre been the main tyre that the drivers were running on as Grosjean set a 1m:45.724 to go quickest. Gutierrez would go quicker with a 1m:45.104 on the supersoft tyre. Ten drivers were on the track but this number would grow. A 1m:44.624 from Alonso to go quickest as Hulkenberg went third behind Gutierrez. Vettel would set a 1m:43.337 to move ahead of Alonso running on the soft tyre. Palmer was third followed by Magnussen and Gutierrez fifth. Verstappen went quickest with a 1m:43.233. with Felipe now seventh. On the supersoft Raikkonen would go quickest with a 1m:42.808. Vettel was third followed by Perez and Alonso.

Also using the supersoft tyre Valtteri would go quickest but Vettel would move ahead with a 1m:42.577 but Raikkonen would also improve with a 1m:42.257 to go quickest. Vettel was second followed by Valtteri, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Perez, and Felipe. Valtteri was now second while Rosberg was sixth with a 1m:42.779. Perez was seventh followed by Hulkenberg. Hamilton was out on the track running on the soft tyre like his team-mate. With an hour and ten minutes remaining both Williams cars had pitted. Rosberg was now third with a 1m:42.294 as the track cleared with just a few cars running. Both Mercedes cars would pit briefly stopping in their pit boxes then going back out. Hamilton was down in twenty first complaining that his wheels need rebalancing.

Vettel was out on an ultrasoft tyre run and would go quickest with a 1m:41.404, to be 0.853 ahead of Raikkonen who had set his time on the supersoft tyre. More drivers were coming out on the ultrasoft tyre including both Williams cars. The Williams cars would go second and fourth after their ultrasoft tyre runs. Rosberg was on an ultrasoft tyre run as Vettel improved with a 1m:41.130. Rosberg would set a 1m:40.940 to go quickest by 0.190 over Vettel. Hamilton was out on the ultrasoft tyre as Perez went fourth. Verstappen would go third seeing the Williams drivers now fourth and eighth. Hamilton would go quickest with a 1m:40.861 to lead Rosberg by just 0.079s. Perez and Hulkenberg were eighth and ninth. With forty five minutes remaining the order was Hamilton, Rosberg, Vettel, Verstappen, Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Valtteri, Perez, Hulkenberg, and Felipe tenth. Ricciardo was able to move ahead of Raikkonen to be fifth.

Both Mercedes would continue their runs on the ultrasoft tyre as others also came out for similar runs. Button was up to twelfth as Rosberg switched to the soft tyre joining Vettel. Rosberg had also changed his front wing to a development one. Hamilton would also switch to the soft tyre for a long run. The Williams drivers had split their running with one driver on the supersoft and the other the soft. Vettel would stop with what he reported as a gearbox failure. With the end of the session there would be no change in the order as the drivers focused on longer runs, The Williams drivers were both in the top ten with a seventh and tenth. Drivers would be allowed to complete practice starts on the grid.

Valtteri Bottas:
Valtteri was out with ten minutes of the session completed running on the supersoft tyre with the team splitting their tyre testing. Valtteri would set a 1m:42.611 to move to the top of the times. He would drop to third and would go quickest in the second sector seeing him move up to second with a 1m:42.258. Valtteri would also pit after his supersoft tyre run. With just over an hour remaining Valtteri would also come out for an ultrasoft tyre run. Valtteri would set a 1m:41.959 to improve but would remain second. He would drop to fourth and would pit after just four laps. Sitting in the pits he would drop to seventh. Valtteri would return to the track running on the set of ultrasoft tyres he had just set his quick time on. Valtteri would switch to the supersoft tyre with just under thirty minutes remaining. With the end of the session Valtteri had completed sixteen laps on his supersoft tyre runs.

Felipe Massa:
Felipe would be first out for Williams again on the soft tyre. This was a set that had a few laps on it, most likely his installation lap tyres from the previous session. Felipe would set a 1m:44.583 to be fifth but this would become sixth as Verstappen went quickest. He would drop to eighth as others went quicker. Felipe would improve with a 1m:44.087 to be seventh. He would drop to tenth and would pit. Currently eleventh and Felipe would follow his team-mate out laos on the ultrasoft tyre. Felipe's first lap would see him set a 1m:42.268 to move up to fourth. He would drop to eighth and would also pit. This would become tenth as others went faster. Felipe would also come back out on the used ultrasoft tyre looking at a race simulation run. Felipe would pit with just over twenty minutes remaining but would return after a brief stop having switched to a set of used soft tyres. Felipe would complete twelve laps on his soft tyre run.
