European GP: Change of fortunes for Williams Martini drivers

Qualifying for the 2016 Euroepan GP would see a change of fortunes for the Williams Martini drivers. Despite having being behind his team-mate in all the practice sessions Felipe Massa would finish ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas. Felipe would finish in sixth and Valtteri eighth. Felipe will start the race from fifth with other drivers receiving grid penalties. Valtteri would come away not happy with his qualifying with traffic and then the red flag hindering his performance.

Team Summary:
Q1: The opening eighteen minute period would commence with a rush of drivers coming out with everyone on the supersoft tyre. This would include both Williams drivers. Hamilton would set a 1m:44.259 to be quickest only to see Rosberg move ahead with a 1m:44.136. After their fir4st runs Valtteri and Felipe were third and fifth. Felipe would drop to seventh then eighth as the period continued. This would become ninth while at the front Hamilton would run have to take to the escape road. Seven minutes remaining and Valtteri and Felipe were fourth and eighth. Rosberg had improved with a 1m:43.685 as the track got quicker. Perez was now third. With both Williams drivers back in their pits they were fifth and tenth. With the end of the period Valtteri and Felipe would finish in sixth and thirteenth.

Q2: The second fifteen minute period would commence with both Williams cars being amongst the last to come out. A 1m:45.000 from Sainz with the Hass cars second and third. Kvyat would set a 1m:44.872 to go quickest only to see Felipe go fastest. But Valtteri would move ahead seeing Williams first and second. But Rosberg and Perez would move into first and second with Rosberg setting a 1m:42.520. Vettel was now third seeing Valtteri drop to fourth. Felipe was sixth with both Williams cars in the pits with five minutes remaining. Verstappen was now third seeing Valtteri fifth and Felipe seventh. Both Williams cars were out on the track on new supersoft tyres. Hamilton would make a mistake having to take to the escape road currently tenth. There were many yellow flags seeing drivers having to back off. Hamilton was able to put in a quick lap going second with a 1m:43.526.

Q3: Both Williams cars were into the final period as the cars came out. Valtteri was out on the track as Felipe remained in his pit. Vettel would go quickest with a 1m:44.260 from Raikkonen and Kvyat. Ricciardo was fifth while both Mercedes cars had put in slow laps. Perez would go quickest with a 1m:43.515 as Hamilton had to go down the escape road. Rosberg and Hamilton were in seventh and eighth. Hamilton would touch the wall stopping out on the track. His team-mate Rosberg would set a 1m:42.758 to be quickest. The session would be red flagged seeing Rosberg remain quickest. Replays show Hamilton hitting the wall with his right front tyre braking the suspension. The period would resume with both Williams cars back out. It would be a case of one flying lap but no one was getting close to Rosberg's time. Ricciardo would finish in third ahead of Vettel and Raikkonen. Felipe was sixth followed by Kvyat, Valtteri, Verstappen, and Hamilton would be tenth.

Valtteri Bottas:
Q1: After the dramas of his final practice where his car would be damaged by a lose drain cover Valtteri was able to get out for the first period. He would come out on a new set of supersoft tyres for his first run. Valtteri's firs time would be a 1m:45.263 to be third. Valtteri would drop to fourth as Ricciardo moved ahead of him. Perez and Hulkenberg would move ahead of Valtteri with the Williams driver now sixth. Valtteri would also find time as several laps and he would set a 1m:44.706 to be fourth. Valtteri would pit with five minutes remaining. He would drop to fifth as Perez moved into third. Kvyat would move up to fifth in the dying moments to see Valtteri sixth.

Q2: Valtteri was out with a new set of supersoft tyres and would set a 1m:44.477 to move ahead of his team-mate to be quickest. He would drop down to fourth as he pitted. After a short stop Valtteri would return to the track. Valtteri would drop to seventh as others went quicker.

Q3: Valtteri was out first for Williams in the final period and would set a 1m:45.246 to be sixth. He would pit still sixth returning on a new set of supersoft tyres. With the session being red flagged Valtteri would not improve dropping to eighth. Even with Perez's penalty Valtteri will remain in eighth. On the restart of the period Valtteri would abort his lap remaining in eighth.
 
Massa
 

Felipe Massa:
Q1: Felipe would be first out for Williams running on a new set of supersoft tyres. A 1m:46.570 to be sixth after his first run. He would drop to seventh as other drivers moved ahead. This would become eighth then eleventh. But as Felipe got his supersoft tyres working he would set a 1m:45.494 to be eighth. Felipe would pit currently ninth. As Raikkonen went seventh Felipe would drop to tenth behind Vettel. But Gutierrez was able to move ahead of Felipe seeing him eleventh then thirteenth. Felipe was really struggling and it was now looking very good for him to get past Q2.

Q2: Felipe would be first out for Williams on a new set of supersoft tyres. He would set a 1m:44.696 to be quickest. But team-mate Valtteri would move ahead as Felipe dropped to fifth. like Valtteri Felipe would also pit not wanting to use these tyres any more as they are the ones that he will most likely start the race on. He would drop to sixth behind Raikkonen. Felipe would return to the track as Kvyat moved ahead of him seeing him now eighth. With the end of the period Felipe would finish tenth.

Q3: Felipe would remain in his pit looking like he would come out for a single run. Felipe would finally come out with five minutes remaining. He would set a 1m:44.483 to be fourth. He would drop to fifth to be behind the two Ferrari's. But with the final lap after the restart Felipe would drop to sixth. With second place Perez having to drop down five grid positions Felipe will start from fifth. Felipe would pit knowing that he would not be able to start his last lap.
