Hungarian GP: Williams Martini Grand Prix Preview

July 21 2015

The next round of the 2015 Formula One season sees the Williams Martini team move to the twisty Hungaroring circuit for the 2015 Hungarian GP. For both Williams drivers, Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas, it is a circuit that they enjoy returning to. Both drivers are confident that with the upgrades on the FW37 aimed at extra downforce that they are looking at another comptetive weekend.

Hungaroring Circuit

When making a mid-summer trip to the Hungaroring you can expect to endure temperatures in the mid-30s. For a driver in the cockpit of a Formula One car, this can be in excess of 60 degrees. Combining these conditions with the demanding barrage of corner after corner with very few straights for rest and you have the kind of situation Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa will be in during the Hungarian Grand Prix. Although moderately slow in Formula One terms with an average speed over one lap of 120mph, the slippery track conditions result in the circuit being a challenge the drivers relish. The end of the Grand Prix also marks the long awaited and greatly deserved summer break for drivers and team personnel alike.

ROB SMEDLEY:
Hungary is tight and twisty, and is a low efficiency circuit in terms of aerodynamics but also has some high speed corners. The balance of the car is important as the long loaded corners tend to highly stress the front tyres and lead to graining, but you then go into the traction phase with hot rear tyres, so it’s not easy to get a good lap in. The temperature always plays its part with hot ambient temperatures and this has an effect on the power unit and aerodynamic set-up. We enjoy staying in Budapest, a culture rich city with passionate race fans from all over the East of Europe.

FELIPE MASSA:
Hungary is a special place for me. I have a lot of fans there after my accident in 2009 and since then the people have really got behind me which is great. Being so close to a city which has such fantastic culture really adds to the race weekend. This circuit wouldn’t normally suit our car because it’s quite low speed, but we have improved the car so much in recent races with the upgrades we have introduced so we should have another competitive weekend.

VALTTERI BOTTAS:
Budapest is a great city and hosts a great race. There are a lot of Finnish fans living in Hungary, but also many who make the trip for this race weekend so I always have a lot of support - it’s almost a Finnish Grand Prix. The circuit is very different from the last few because it’s much tighter with more medium and slow speed corners, but our development has been focused on tracks like this and generating higher downforce. We should be looking to have a strong weekend and to build on the good momentum we have built.

Looking forward to some improvement... having said that I think it'll be a tough race. Two cars in Q3 would be great, with some solid points by sunday along with a Ferrari double DNF.

Analysis: Will Williams Slip Back Down The Order In Hungary?
The true picture of the team's progress is still unclear. The Hungaroring features a greater ratio of low-speed corners than Silverstone, and places far greater emphasis on pure downforce, hence greater optimism for the likes of Red Bull and McLaren-Honda, who are suffering large power deficits, and some uncertainty in the Williams camp.

It is very hot in central/eastern part of Europe for the last few weeks so it is going to be really difficult for drivers and engines.

EDIT: Well there's our luck. As i said it is very hot for the last few weeks but this weekend there are showers predicted in Budapest...

We'll be crying this weekend. So I'm gonna put my focus on Verstappen instead of our performance..

If it's dry, I think we have a sporting chance as the team say. Bottas in last years slippery car was up there with the red bulls in qualifying. If it's wet at any stage? Game over.

Well, last year was not all that bad for Williams. Bottas qualified 3rd and was running 2nd in the (wet!) race until SC screwed him badly.

This year's car is much worse in the wet so comparisons to last year don't really mean anything. Different season, different car.

If it rains consistently then I think the weekend will be a write-off. Heck, had it rained earlier in the race in Silverstone we would've been lucky to be in the points.

So, let's hope for some good weather. And some opportune upgrades to the car as well.

Well if we have followed up as a team on the suggestion that Mercedes are varying the front ride height on slow corners we may yet generate considerably more downforce at the back end and work those rear tyres harder. The team are very good at rapid development work and it is surely too early to write the weekend before the cars are even assembled. And we still haven't worked out why they tested those strange aero bits about 4 weeks ago.
I haven't bothered with all the speculation on this site about the drivers because right now it's the car development that matters. If the FW37 delivers another grandstanding opportunity like Silverstone we will see a queue of disgruntled ex-WDCs and other talent at our door. (Unless of course we adopt that Start Lap engine mapping which made such a mess of the start for both Mercedes and both Ferraris.)

That weather forecast of drizzle has been pushed back . . . tomorrow could be really hot, like today, and Sunday dry . . . that will helpof course
