 FIA Approved 2016 Calendar

The FIA has approved a record twenty one race calendar for the 2016 Formula 1 season. The calendar sees quite a few changes with Russia moving from October to April while Malaysia moves back from March to September, after organisers requested a later date when it announced a new deal until 2018.

The season's latest start since 1988 has been rubber-stamped following a World Motor Sport Council meeting in Mexico, with Australia retaining the honour of hosting the first race on April 3. There will be seven back-to-back races - Australia/China, Bahrain/Russia, Britain/Austria, Germany/Hungary, Belgium/Italy, Singapore/Malaysia and USA/Mexico.

The inaugural race in Baku in Azerbaijan, which will be run under the European Grand Prix banner, will be a standalone event on July 17. The British Grand Prix moves forward two weeks to June 26, thus avoiding a clash with the Wimbledon tennis championships for the first time in several years.

APPROVED 2016 CALENDAR:
April 3 - Australia
April 10 - China
April 24 - Bahrain
May 1 - Russia
May 15 - Spain
May 29 - Monaco
June 12 - Canada
June 26 - Britain
July 3 - Austria
July 17 - Europe (Baku)
July 31 - Germany
August 7 - Hungary
August 28 - Belgium
September 4 - Italy
September 18 - Singapore
September 25 - Malaysia
October 9 - Japan
October 23 - USA (Austin)
October 30 - Mexico
November 13 - Brazil
November 27 - Abu Dhabi

Joe Saward's take on it. I certainly agree with a lot of these comments he mentions

Have you been to Baku, Grove?

I don't think many foreigners - mostly contractors - notice the politics there but . . . my god, it is armpit of the universe kinda place. Seems like every other person is drunk and every other woman is a ho.

Can't wait for Bernie to sign up Mogadishu and Tikrit.

I've already got my annual leave booked to hit up the Singapore / Malaysia back-to-back rounds. Will be my 4th visit to the Singapore GP, second to Sepang. Great part of the world to have a holiday, can't wait to start booking things.

Good to have a more compact season.

Baku. Who cares. If it's a good race I don't mind. F1 struggles for a race in NYC but gets one in Baku. Take that, gringos!

Well I understand that Baku is a hot potato at the moment. But so was Russia with the Olympic Games and Brazil with the World Cup. Still both events went on to be held.
Sport is not the way to advocate your means or to announce your believes to the world. Sports should be there to forget any problems that are present and to bring everyone to the same level: being a sports fan. That's why I don't mind Baku being on the calendar.

Indeed, AJ, however, if it's another bog-standard Tilkedrome then it has no business on the calendar when great circuits elsewhere can't get a look in.

Surely it isn't all standard Tilkedrome? I believe there are some very slow, narrow city corners (which won't suit our cars) from what I read some months ago

Well signore 'stache I do not think, as Rumble pointed out as well, that Baku is a Tilkedrome. To me the ultimate wet dream of Tilke is Abu Dhabi. And Baku is nowhere near that. Its a fast flowing circuit around the ancient city center with some 90 degree bends at the end of the lap. Im very curious as it is a circuit layout not featured anywhere on the calendar before in recent history. And we all know, some peculiar track layouts do tend to have great racing in them.

I like the look of some of the fast sweepers too. The course is a long one: close to 4 miles, which for a street course could be quite a mission; I like the idea that every lap is a journey and around an ancient city I have never seen, in a country I have never seen, on the shores of a sea I have never seen, it all smacks of adventure, if you totally ignore pragmatics, fans attending and politics. Hell. I'm a TV fan these days: just go race...

What I cannot understand is how Bernie thinks the European Grand Prix can be held in what, according to my atlas, is Asia? It's the second country to the east of Asia Minor, for goodness sake. When I studied geography Istanbul was the meeting place of the two continents (and Turkey tenuously claimed to be European due to lying athwart the Golden Horn). All of geography seems to be being rewritten recently in some strange scramble to call everywhere within three hours airtime of Europe as Europe, a bit like estate agents trying to describe North Cricklewood as Hampstead Borders. Wicked Uncle B might as well have held the European GP in Shanghai, albeit with fewer opportunities for bungs.

I'm sure Baku government is paying handsomely for that title...

I live on the other side of the planet and those caucasus countries have always intrigued me. Muslim, at the soviet-iranian-turkish crossroads, always a pawn of the bigger empires that surround them... it's just a place that is so utterly beyond my life experience that I can't even begin to make sense of it. I'd love to visit!

Rumble, I do have to tell off your geographic skills. Azerbaijan is the most eastern part of the European continent. It inherited this as it seperated from Russia during the fall of the communistic regime of the USSR.
Also Baku held the very famous inaugural European Games just last month. Hardly anyone has seen anything of it. But hey, it was European wasn't it?

It must be European. It takes part in the Eurovision Song Contest.

I was always told Europe ended at the Urals, though I was never convinced. I guess the logic is, you can connect Azerbaijan with Russia and Russia with the rest of Europe. So it's claim comes from being north of Saudi Arabia and west of the Urals, but for someone in Western Europe it sure seems different.

Still, I don't see why they have any more to do with Japan, Yemen and Indonesia than Ireland, Norway and Austria so I guess it's fair game. Europe has always been tiny, Asia massive, so maybe Europe needs to loosen up a bit? If Alexander the Great and the Romans wanted it, and if it's neighbouring country wants to name itself after England's patron saint, then i suppose it's not quite as left field as it sounds.

Georgia and Azerbaijan are the border states of Europe. Hell even part of Kazakhstan is in Europe.

The problem here is that we perceive Europe by EU and its western countries like Germany, France, Italy, ... and not like a continent.
To me, those eastern countries have nothing in common with what we "westerners" call Europe.

What you call Europe is irrelevant. The border is relevant.

Yes I think that is very true, certainly for me, and it is probably one of the insular consequences of the Cold War.
