United States GP: Nasr leads Massa for Williams in FP1

The opening Friday practice session for the 2014 United States GP would see Williams Martini drivers Felipe Nasr and Felipe Massa finish in 8th and 11th. For Nasr this was his first time back in the FW36 for quite some time makinbg his performance that much better.

For the Williams Martini team Friday practice for the 2014 United States Grand Prix would see Felipe Nasr take the place of regular driver Valtteri Bottas. He would join Felipe Massa as the session got under way. Both Williams drivers would complete their installation laps. For this session the drivers would again have an extra set of medium tyres to use and after eight minutes of the session it would be Button fastest with a 1m:41.158 while for Williams Felipe Nasr was third, 1m:42.127, and Felipe Massa fourth, 1m:42.587.Second was Magnussen followed by Raikkonen. But Alonso would improve to be second with a time of 1m:41.323. Other drivers would also improve with Hamilton now fifth having led the times early on.

Magnussen would move to the top of the times with a 1m:41.078. Rosberg was now sixth, 1m:42.027, while Nasr had pitted currently seventh. Massa had dropped to ninth as Nasr quickly returned to the track. Another new face running in the session was Max Verstappen running with Torro Rosso. He was down in eleventh with a 1m:42.956. Both Williams cars had pitted along with the rest of the field with the drivers coming in to return their set of Pirelli tyres. The top ten was Magnussen followed by Button, Alonso, Hamilton, Raikkonen, Rosberg, Nasr, Kvyat, Massa, and Ricciardo. Button would be the first to return to the track going fastest in sector one. Button would complete his lap going fastest with a 1m:40.319. Button would pit briefly returning to the track along with the bulk of the field.

Rosberg was able to move up to second, 1m:40.675, but Hamilton would move to the top of the times with a 1m:40.106. Kvyat was now third followed by Magnussen and Alonso. Nasr and Massa were both back on the track with the pair eleventh and fifteenth. Vettel was seventh while his team-mate was still in his pit as his mechanics worked on an engine related issue with his car. Rosberg was able to move into second with a 1m:40.233 to be behind his team-mate. But Hamilton would improve his quickest time setting a 1m:40.044.Felipe was able to improve with a 1m:41.907 to be tenth. Nasr was still eleventh but he was on a quicker lap finishing with a 1m:41.545 to be eighth. Massa had dropped to eleventh one place behind Verstappen. Hamilton would again improve with a 1m:40.004 to maintain his position at the top of the times. Alonso would pit taking on a new front wing currently sixth.

Massa would pit with just over twenty two minutes remaining as Hamilton set a new fastest first sector time. Hamilton would complete his lap setting a 1m:39.941 on a track that only had three cars running. Hamilton would pit as Rosberg returned to the track joining Alonso and Vettel. Kvyat was also back out followed shortly after by Verstappen. Both Williams cars had only complete fourteen laps at this point with ten minutes remaining. Both Mercedes cars were on the track but neither of the Williams drivers had returned. But it would be Massa first to return after some changes were made to his car. With five minutes remaining only Nasr and Ricciardo were still in the pits. But both Vettel and Alonso would also come in. Alonso's stop would be brief with just a few minutes remaining. Nasr would finally return to the track as Hulkenberg pitted briefly.

The session would come to an end with Hamilton remaining fastest from Rosberg, Button, Kvyat, Magnussen, Alonso, Vettel, Nasr, Hulkenberg, and Verstappen. Massa would remain eleventh but he was close to two seconds off the quickest time.
