Spanish GP: Williams Martini GP Preview

By Williams Martini Racing
May 7 2014

Williams Martini Racing moves back to Europe for the 2014 Spanish GP. The team is looking forward to this race as it will allow them to bring a series of upgrades to a track that they know very well. But with no winter testing at this track it will be the first time the 2014 FW36 has run on it. Despite this the team is hopeful of continuing their good start to their season.

2014 Spanish GP Preview

Barcelona Circuit

There are few better places to kick-off the European season than Barcelona. It’s a great city and since the elevation of Fernando Alonso into a global superstar 10 years ago, the Spanish fans have become passionate and knowledgeable about F1.

The layout of the Circuit de Catalunya doesn’t disappoint either. It has every kind of corner, from fast to slow, making it a thorough workout for the cars and a great testing venue. The teams have completed thousands of kilometres at the track since it was built in 1991, but there was no winter testing this year so this weekend will be the first time the 2014 cars have run at the track.

Williams has a good record in Spain, having won the race six times, including its most recent visit to the top step of the podium in 2012.

Rod Smedley:
Spain is a good leveller. Getting back to Europe gives teams the opportunity to bring further upgrades, which we will also be doing. Barcelona and the following two or three races gives everyone a good indication of how the rest of the season will play out and who has made the most progress since the start of the season. The teams and drivers know the track well, meaning we can gain a lot of accurate data on how the upgrades are working. This knowledge is also very useful when back in factory; it
means we can replicate the track and conditions very closely. The track itself has a very good mix of long straights, some high speed corners like Turn 3 and some more technical and slower sections. Turn 3 is important for managing tyre wear so it’s something engineers and drivers have to monitor throughout the weekend. We feel prepared going in to the weekend and are now interested to see where we are in comparison to our competitors.

Felipe Massa:
I have won in Barcelona before which is important as it means I can enjoy the race a little more. I know what it takes to win at the circuit so I can have a little confidence when driving there. Downforce is really important in Spain so we have to make sure the aerodynamic set-up is correct. We have been working on developing the car in this area. Barcelona is historically a place where teams bring upgrades, but as every team does this it’s a case of whose upgrades make the most difference. I am really looking forward to racing again in Europe.

Valtteri Bottas:
As a team we are looking forward to Spain, once we are in Europe it’s easier to bring upgrades out over a race weekend. The time gap between China and Spain has been really important as we have had time to improve the car, although how much we have moved forward is hard to say until we drive it. We haven’t driven in Spain with the current car, which is unusual as in previous years we completed a lot of laps in testing, so we all know the layout well, but will need to work on the set-up.

I think I'll skip my first F1 race since Malaysia 2007 and won't watch this.

I've a couple of reasons for that.

Adam Parr @adam_s_parr 1m

Two years ago this weekend @WilliamsRacing took pole and victory in Spain. I would love to see that happen again this weekend. And why not?

Or is this a mockup car??...

Looking at the mirrors it looks like so. Forget what I said, it's the Fw35.

It functions quite well but it is the oldest motorhome in the paddock. Goes up real quick though

They said they would bring a new motorhome here... It seems that with only paiting it they consider it as a new one.

Never heard about there being a new motorhome. I don't think it needs to change. Suits its purpose fine as it is. Robust, simple, focused. no frou frou. Just like Williams.

The announcement of a new motorhome was in the press on the sponsorship of the Martini. However, I believe that the motorhome is an unnecessary expense, much more useful for the image of the team the beautiful Terrazza smiling smiley

I must say, that I am extreamly dissapointed by F1 photographers. There is a bilion pictures of the drivers every race, and they are always smiling and stuff (does any F1 fans actually look at 100s of Vettel photos every weekend?).

But here in Barcelona, where all the teams are bringing big updates, I can probably count the pics of the cars on my fingers (and toes). I know I would look at every single one of the pic I could find of FW36.

EDIT: well AMUS photographers are a bit better tongue sticking out smiley

The only change I see, is that the mirrors are mounted more conventionaly.

Camera on off switch? I had no idea that the driver could turn on and of a camera? Maybe thermal cameras for the tire temperatures?

FW36 is a fine looking car. I love it so much I could marry it.
